Has anyone had trouble with the wiring in the rear harness (the one that splits to the tail lights, and trailer plug). I am not getting juice to the right turn signal in trailer plug. I traced it to the plug before the final harness and have power there but not to the plug that powers trailer harness. It looks like I have to take of hitch or rear bumper, or possibly both to get out the harnees to look for the break. Am i correct in this. Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't bother pulling off the rear bumper. I had mine off when I replaced it last year. The only wires in there were for the reverse sensors, and having the bumper out of the way doesn't gain you a whole heck of a lot in regards to tracing the main light harness. BTW, have you pulled the trailer plug-socket (mounted to the hitch receiver) to check if the wire going to it has juice? It may (hopefully) be that the connection inside the socket has come loose. If the Ford sockets are anything like other Bargman receptacles I've messed with, the wires are held in place by small screws. |

I pulled the the plug socket and checked that. No juice that far. The last place I am getting juice is the wire on the ending side of the plug where the tail-light harness plugs into harness leading to the front. I can't check much more than that because of limited access through hole behind license plate. I'm pretty good with wiring, I wired all of my old hot rod, but I can't reach anything on the Ex. If needed I can replace tail-light harness. I get good prices through my friends body shop account at dealership. If I pull bumper off it looks like I can access whole tailight harness. Can bumper be removed without dropping hitch?

Yes, the bumper can be removed without dropping the hitch. They are not connected.
Remove your license plate, disconnect the reverse sensors, disconnect the lic-plate lamps, and pull those wires from the bumper. There are two bolts on each outboard side of the frame rail. Loosen/remove those two bolts (the nuts are "captured" on the inside face of the frame rails), and you can drop the bumper in one assembly (chrome outer cover & inner-frame).
You'll want some wooden blocks handy in order to brace the loosened bumper on top of the hitch receiver. I think I used a short 2x4 placed directly atop the hitch receiver. Once it's rested there, you should be able to man-handle it straight rearward while sitting on a short stool. My stool had wheels, and I layed out a thick blanket nearby on which I laid the bumper (didn't want it to get scratched). |

Here is the repair.
1. Remove plate to access back-up sensor harness plug and plate lights.
2. Back-up sensor harness plug is just inside opening and to the right. And of course the plate lights are obvious.
3.Once electical is disconnected next comes bumper bracket bolts. Two on each side, bolt are captured, once both nuts are off you need to tap out bolts with a mallet, as they are seated in the frame.
4. I tucked a towel between bumper and hitch and eased bumper back and it lifted right out. Then placed it on a blanket to avoid scratches.
5. Unfortunately my wiring problem was up the frame somewhere so I just ran a splice from the tail-light wiring to the trailer plug wire harness. All is good now.
6. Re-install was just reverse. Once the bumper is in place you will have to reach through plate opening to replace bumper bracket bolts. Whole job took me about an hour.
Thanks Landyot for the info to get me started it was just as easy as you described.

You're welcome, but from the last photo, I see that my recollection was off a bit. You CAN access the wires a whole lot easier with the bumper out of the way. Glad you were able to make a fix. |

Thanks for the detailed Pictures. Glad to see you could fix your problem...Too bad you couldn't trace the problem back to the source though.
