My 01 Excursion has a few noises I was wondering if y'all can help me diagnose.
1. At 70-75 mph, there seems to be a harmonic drone/engine vibration, kinda sounds/feels like ruuummmp - ruuummmp - ruuummmp. This vibration/noise is very noticeable when I am towing my 6000 pound travel trailer. If I let off the gas peddle when this is happening, it goes away, but as soon as I get back on the gas it comes back. It definitely feels like it is coming from the engine/engine compartment.
2. Another noise I get is what seems to be an extreme split second rattle when the engine is under the stress of towing and the trans shifts into overdrive. I get a loud rattle with vibration that can be felt in the floor. Ford dealer said my exhaust pipe is cracked just past the catalytic converter, but would this cause this rattle? Why would I get this rattle at all/what would cause the exhaust pipe to crack? Truck has 45K miles on it, can't imagine why the exhaust is cracked already.
3. Last question is about tire pressure. I'm sure this topic has been brought up before but I could not find a search engine on this site. I have the stock tires/wheels, and I think Ford adjusted them to 35 pounds during the free oil change, The tires seem to look flat as there is so much meat on these tires. Was wondering what p.s.i. other owners keep their tires at and if there is a noticeable difference in mpg's with different tire pressures.
Thanx.

1. We had a similar problem when we bought our Ex (used). It went away when we put new shoes on it.
2. Sounds like you might have some rattling springs in the torque converter. You need to get that checked.
3. 35lbs is quite under-pressured for E-rated tires (if that's what you have). Ford adjusted mine to 45/55 f/r and I actually like them a little more inflated than that - 65/75. I would think there to be a noticable mpg decline air'd down to 35lbs.

35PSI tire pressure is dangerously low for the Excursion. You're risking a blowout at highway speeds. Inflate those puppies ASAP. Then start going to a different dealer because that one obviously knows nothing at all about trucks. I run 60PSI at all four corners in mine. |

Agreed............ inside the gas cap is the recommend air pressure for your X. Take a look, I think it's 50/55 front to back.
pump 'em up.
