2,498 lbs. of pot seized from Ford Excursion
ARIZONA DAILY STAR
U.S. Border Patrol agents Wednesday seized nearly 2,500 pounds of marijuana in a stolen SUV south of Arivaca, officials said.
They said the seizure was an unusually large load for one vehicle.
Agents saw the 2000 Ford Excursion Limited on a U.S. Forest Service road and noticed it was traveling low to the ground, said agency spokesman Rob Daniels.
While attempting to escape the agents, the driver became stuck on an embankment and then ran away with a passenger.
One agent arrived at the vehicle and briefly pursued the smugglers, but returned to secure the load with other agents, Daniels said.
"We routinely get loads that large, but not usually in one vehicle," Daniels said. "It was jammed."
The vehicle contained 100 plastic-wrapped bundles of marijuana weighing 2,498 pounds, with an estimated value of about $2 million.
Since the start of the fiscal year, Oct. 1, the Border Patrol Tucson Sector has seized more than 177,000 pounds of marijuana, a 17 percent increase over the same time last year, which set the record for marijuana seizures, Daniels said.
