ANyone have a problem with this giant thump sound on occasion when you first start up. Sounds like it comes fron the right front. It sounds like some huge A$$ vacuum door slammimg. It doesn't seem to do it everytime but it has been around since I first got the X.

Yeap it's the Air conditioning/heater Blenddoor closing/opening,happens on just about every Excursion/Superduty.

I second that but mine does it occasionally and only when I put it in drive and hit the gas. It usually happens when the vehicle has been cold for a while.

I'll have to second on that the blenddoor is abit more noisy when the colder temps are upon us.

Well, if the sound you guys are speaking about is the same noise MY Excursion is making, then you just made my day!
I have had my Excursion to the dealer twice regarding a huge SHUDDER/ THUD about a minute after I first start it, and then press of the accelerator pedal. It seems so loud and powerful that I feel it in the pedals!!!!!

The dealer had NO clue what it was, but he offered to ride around with me to see if it would do it. Naturally, after starting and stopping the engine about a thousand times in an hour, we just gave up!
He said it may have something to do with the A.C. and the oil that is inside it.
It is hard to get used to, but it is rare.

I am SO GLAD that I am not the only one!!!!!!
Can someone explain what the heck a "blend door" is? I am curious so I can just ignore the sound when I hear it.
This site is wonderful...... I had been so worried about this thud sound.

J,the blenddoor is in the Heater/AC blower box assembly under the passenger side dash, when you turn you key to "run" the vacuum motor fires up and add negative pressure to the vacuum lines and that's when you hear the somewhat annoying "thump" that would be the door either opening or closing depending on your heat/air settings(MAX,floor, defrost, etc.)

I usually notice mine when I haven't started the truck in a few days. I have only heard it about 3 times in the the short 2 months I have owned it. What you are describing is EXACTLY what I feel and hear as well. No reason to fret I reckon.

Bill... your description makes perfect sense, but this huge shudder-sound seems to come from under the hood, possibly near the right front. Regardless, I feel it in my pedals. LIKE Danny above, it is rare and only has showed maybe a dozen times in 6 months of ownership.
It just doesnt seem like a simple vacuum door closing under the dash.
At first, I complained to the dealer that my A.C. compressor pulley was completely damaged and probably locked up, since the sound only came on when I turned on the "fan" or A.C. then pressed in the accellerator pedal. But, the compressor pulley was fine.

All your descriptions really make me think it may be this blenddoor situation.
Would it be possible to feel the blenddor all the way in my pedals for that brief second? Or, could the shudder be so intense that it would seem as though the compressor pulley under the hood is locked up?
Danny, you're right..... there's probably no reason to fret.
