All,

We have a 2002 4x4 diesel Excursion Limited (Ultimate) and would like some feedback from anyone experienced with these questions:

1) We're planning to put Rancho 9000x shocks on it:

A) I recently ran across a special that was offering the remote for no extra charge but I missed the deadline (11/1). Does that special run often?

B) We have done no suspension mods, so if I go with the Rancho shocks that fit the standard vehicle, how much, if any, lift can be later put on without having to change the shocks? We are not planning to do anything radical, but if the answer is "none" then we may need to think about changing the order in which we do our suspension work....

2) We won't lift it much in any case, so if someone could tell me the various options for lifting it perhaps 2.5 to 3 inches, that would be appreciated.

3) If someone could give me a quick primer on suggested front spring changes, why and what relation is there to lifting the vehicle as described above, I would appreciate that too...

4) Why do I see that some people put F350 "rear blocks" on their Ex?

5) As a practical matter what is the largest tire I can put on the stock wheels without it looking stupid or rubbing somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Heya Phillip

I don't hear of the free included remote system for the 9000X's very often but I'm sure it can happen again if it doesn't get added as standard equipment with a new set of 4 shocks in the future.

The 9000X shocks should be good for a 4.5" lift (Edge)

For doing a 2-3" lift I'd do X code front springs and F350 rear blocks.

I installed the F350 blocks on ours to make up for the clearance lost on the rear springs resting in from towing,so I gained a good 1.5-2" additional clearance which has worked out great as I prefer a forward rake especially when towing.

I chose 285's to fit up to our stockers so we gained a couple inches in height and abit more tread width,I think 285's look best for our application but others have done 305's with good results also.

My plan is to get a set of 16x8" wheels to move the BFG's to for less weight to balance em on,the stance will look even better at the same time

Did the deal with the one guy selling the shocks, swaybar and stabilizer fall through?

Bill

Bill,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll intersperse my responses below. ;-)

I'll do a thorough search before buying. If you know of a sponsor/source on either of the sites you and I frequent would you please drop me a note?

Hey, that's excellent news!

OK, and perhaps that 4x4 shop you mentioned in our phone conversation could be approached about watching out for an F350 lift job where I could scavenge those parts? If you have any thoughts on that we can chat about it if you'd prefer.

But to be clear, if I went with your suggested X code front springs and F350 rear blocks, the rake would be the same as I have now? We don't tow anything heavy, so if the back end would be raised appreciably more than it is now I would want to figure out how to balance things with more front-end lift I guess?

I'll study your pictures a bit more, but the 285's is probably about right. I'll see how yours look and the number combined with visual should be helpful.

I look forward to seeing that. ;-)

Bill, I was ready to jump and sent him a PM (and email as I recall) and never even got the courtesy of a reply... Do you know of another way to reach him?

Hey Phillip-

Check out some of my photos in my gallery as I have 16x8 wheels with 305/70-16 tires.I did a Fabtech 4" lift but my truck is also a 2WD. It should give you an idea on the stance of the vehicle. I will also post some pictures for you soon of my friend's 2001 stock 4X4 X with the same tire/wheel combo as mine and he has no lift.

There's quite a few options when lifting the Excursions,it comes down to what you're gonna do with the truck as far as towing, offroading or just for show.

A view of our X from the rear on V codes with rear blocks and 285's.

Just to note I did add another 150 lbs to the front axle which may have dropped it 1/2-1".
X springs may bring it up another 1" or so over the V's.

I shot that fella with the takeoff parts an email for you to see if he still had em available.

Scott,

Thanks for the pictures and details. I will like looking at your pal's rig to see kind of an apples-to-apples comparison.

Bill, we do minor "off roading" with our Ex only when dragging our 4x4 ATV's to Colorado, using it to pull my truck out of the mud on our ranch, and occaisionally trailering a tractor to the shop. Looks and practical function, while tempering how much is spent, is probably how I would define our interest. Typical, right?

I am planning upgraded shocks, steering stabilizer and rear sway-bar for now. When the tires are ready for replacement we are going to put larger tires on it, but I'm loathe to spend the bucks on replacement wheels. And much thanks for sending the guy the note. When I wrote to him I told him I was interested in the items above but not his programmer/chip(s). If he still has them and is reasonable I'll buy them.

I'm going to be off line for perhaps several days so I'll "see" you guys later.

Regards,

Phil

Welcome Philllip....

I toyed with the remote kit when I got my 9000's, but since it wasn't free at the time I chose to bypass them and have not really missed them...
maybe it's beacause, like my adjustable tuner, I leave them on one setting 99% of the time...

and they are great !
