Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!!! NOW., my really dumb move- I drove the 2002 7.3 PSD with the fuel waaaayy low. As I had the gas station in view at the top of the hill, the engine started the "bone dry dance". I threw in a couple of gallons and tried repeatedly to start. It cranked like a champ but wouldn't fire! The X has 132k on the clock and was running fine. This is it's first New York winter (no more West Palm Beach) and the weather is around 35 degrees. I put in 10 gallons and same deal- glows and cranks but no start. I noticed a sharp "clink" during the cranking like it's pre-igniting. Next, I changed the fuel filter after draining the bowl, filled the bowl 1/2 way with ATF and buttoned things up. I primed 2 times and after endless trying, STILL NO START!! I jumped it to bring the batteries back up multiple times, sprayed WD40 down the plenum- still cranks but no start even though the WD makes some smoke. After repeated trying it almost wanted to start but won't run by itself. I recharged multiple times and then tried my last resort- ether!! I hate that stuff because it's so violent but although it did fire for a few seconds, still NG. The "clink' sound is still there so I left it till tomorrow. Now, there is a big temp drop and first snow starting and I'm going nuts with this!!
Is it possible that the fuel rail/injectors are air bound?? Have any of you ever heard of a bleeding procedure for that end of the fuel system?? I KNOW fuel is getting to the filter because when I first opened the bowl drain fuel sprayed out from the hose at the right side of the block.
I don't see any check engine light and am almost at the point of having it towed to the dealer. What did I do?? The truck was running fine and the rough starts I mentioned in my last post went away after repeated ATF treatments. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Greg
MORE THOUGHTS ON THIS NIGHTMARE: Is it possible that the injector pump needs to be bled?? I noticed an extra screw on top that doesn't go anywhere. It's REALLy cold outside so I'm not doing anything today!! AGAIN- HELP!!!!! MAYDAY!!!!!! SOS!!!!!! |

Try turning the ignition on and off about ten times like this:
on, wait 3 sec, off
on, wait 3 sec, off
This will serve to prime the lines if it indeed was a lack of fuel. Check fuses. Check fuel pump shut off switch. If the pump runs dry it can overheat and pop the shutoff switch,in that case go to the passenger's footwell and behind the kick panel is the switch, push it in with the ignition in the "OFF" position.
Try those if you haven't yet.
Use WD40 only on the earlier pre '97 Diesels, the chemicals could do some damage to internal components to the 99-up Powerstrokes

UPDATE on DUMBASS move - Here's the scoop guys- NEVER let the PSD run out of fuel!!!!! If you do let it run down low and you feel the dreaded cough and burrrrrrrrrrrrrr as it starts to run dry- KILL IT RIGHT AWAY !!! DO NOT try to retstart, especially if it's cold out. Get at least 5 gallons of diesel and prime it (as CHP says) a couple of times without cranking, then start. I ran out on a hill, only put in 1 1/2 gallons and repeatedly tried to restart. I'm sure the whole system became airbound especially on a hill, where the fuel pickup was sucking air. I changed the fuel filter and filled the bowl with ATF and cranked and cranked and cranked..... The wd40 and finally ether (I hate the stuff too- but you know the dealer woulda' used it) sprayed directly into the air filter hose along with a 50 degree day FINALLY got it going. I'm still amazed at the torture the starter, batteries and fuel system went through because I was dtermined not to take it to a dealer. Guess what- after the "enema" the poor 7.3 got with 2 gallons of ATF on a half tank, it's running smoother than ever!! I jsut got back from a 500 mile trip to 0 degree weather and had no trouble at all. Thanks CHP for yer' advice. Now that I moved back to New York from Florida, I switched from the Pennzoil 15w40 oil I used since mile 0001. At 128k, I drained it all and filled it with Mobil One 15w50 synthetic. I swear the motor is smoother and I like the idea of the synthetic in the cold weather. Here's the question- how long should I leave it in before I change it ? I'm thinking 10K, since I usually changed the Pennzoil at 6 to 7 K. What do you guys think???

At least you got er running again and thats the best news one can get On my Mustangs I run synthetic and I change only the oil filter every other 4-5k then the oil on the next 4-5k around depending if I ran it at the track I've never heard of using ATF in the bowl but if it works Hey! it works Have a Safe & Happy New year 2005!
