hey guys,
i am hoping for a little help. i am stuck in a 24" snowfall and when i put my excursion in 4x4 with automatic switch the rear tires are still the only ones turning. the truck has after market wheels with center caps so i can't get to the hubs without taking the wheels off. is it possible the hubs might be in 2x4 and that is why even when i turn the auto 4x4 on my rear tires are stil the only ones that turn?
i bought the truck in the summer and haven't had to use 4x4 untill now...
any help is appreciated!!!!! |

Jack,
Welcome to the forum. On my 2001 X, the options for manually selecting 4WD on the hubs are either "auto" or "manual." Meaning if they do not engage automatically, I should be able to lock them manually. Unfortunately, I've never been able to turn mine when I could access them (stuck in "auto"), and I'm now in the same boat as you ... aftermarket hub covers that deny access. I pray the automatic feature on mine keeps working. Naturally, I'll find out they don't when I'm in dire need of 4WD. I fear that even if you pull wour wheels to access the hubs, you may find them darn near impossible to turn. |

Jack, your automatic hubs are not working and you will be forced to pull the wheels. If you're lucky, you should be able to pull the cover off the hubs and clean them out. Many here have found that WD-40 works well to clean the dust out and get them working again. Worst case would be that a seal is gone and the vacuum actuators won't work. You can't buy the seals from Ford, only the hubs. As Landyot has said, there don't appear to be any other auto hubs. So you might start thinking about how to modify your center caps to give you access to the hubs.
