Looking to purchase 4x4 Excursion with V8. Can anyone tell me how's the fuel economy? How about power - does the 5.4 L have enough?

I have a 5.4L and have been pleased. It doesn't have the power of a v10, but the 5.4L suits me just fine and I really don't tow anything heavy or with much frequency. Oh yeah, the gas mileage is pretty decent too as I routinely get 13-16 mpg. I did do some upgrades like an air intake and exhaust system which I am certain is responsible for 90% of the numbers I get. (Although not lately with winter blend gas)
If you are going to tow or need an obscene amount of torque, get yourself a diesel. My buddy did a ton of mods to his and the thing goes like hell. Whatever flavor of EX you get , let us know and send along a few snapshots. Welcome to the forum!

I have an 02 EX. I wanted the PSD but wife did not want a stinky smelling car. I would not get the V8. It is too small to push the mighty beast. I had an Expedition with the same engine 5.4L and it barely got that truck moving along. I would highly recommend the V10. I consistantly get 11-13 mpg in the city. Do yourself a favor, get the V10, you'll regret the small V8. |

I agree that the V8 leaves a lot to be desired but with some mods like exhaust and an air intake, the truck has a lot more umpf than it did stock. If I did it all over again, or should I say when, I will most definately get a diesel. There is nothing wrong with a V10 if gas instead of diesel is what you prefer. Of course with gas as much as .50 a gallon less over diesel ( Here in MD 1.69 vs 2.21), maybe the choice is easy.
50 cents x 44 gallons= OUCH!
