Hello everyone!!

Ive got another (yeah, another one... ) question....I was driving home from the store last night, I was getting ready to turn out of the parking lot, ( I wasnt rolling yet) I made a left hand turn and it sounded like my power steering pump was cavitating, or sounded like the pump was "grinding" I continued home and then inspected everything that I could, but no leaks, servicing is perfect, and when Im driving it steers fine, then I was sitting at a red light again tonight, and I heard what I thought was the pump cavitating again, So Im gonna go out on a limb and say its a pump, but I need some help from you guys that have had some steering problems in the past, I still have the stock pump, and steering stabilizer, ect...I bought it with 65K on the meter, its a 2000 Limited 4x4 V-10, Like I said when the revs are up, and driving down the road its all good, just when Im coasting into a parking spot or stopped turning (like at an intersection or somethng like that) I hope I explained it enough for everyone, and any help that you all can give me I would really appriciate!! Thanks in advance everyone!!

Scott, I have 75K on my 2000 V-10 and I just replaced the power steering pump about 2 months ago. It was always very noisy first thing in the morning whenever it was wet and rainy out. It would go away after it warmed up. It then began leaking from the pressure hose connection to the pump. All problems went away when the pump was replaced. It sounds like you might be on the front end of the same scenario. I wouldn't do anything yet. If the noise starts to get loader or more often and/or if you develop a leak, then I would plan to replace the pump.

It is a real pain in the butt to replace the pump.... mostly getting the pulley off the front. There is little room to work, even on a lift. There is a special tool needed to remove the pulley, so I let my mechanic do it. We replaced the serpentine belt (and the pressure hose) while we were at it because it had been sprayed by the leaking hose connection. All told, it was about $400.

I believe there was some similar discussion about this same problem over at the FTE website or TheDieselStop.com website. But i think the problem was more pronounced in colder climes. You may want to do a search at those sites.

What is a "colder clime"? It was only 11 below this morning. Thank goodness for the block heater.

Yepper, I did a search on it, and took it to the dealer the other day, they told me to do a flush and see what happens!! So, thank Landyot, and rozett, I appriciate it!

I found that both of mine whined unless the Power steering fluid was AT the full level. I did a brake job last summer & while turning the steering wheel from left to right without the engine running, it puked fluid out of the cap. Very little actually, but enough to make noise until I topped it off exactly full. Very sensitive! A few at the diesel stop have switched out the fluid with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. I plan to do the same to ensure long life of the components on the trucks. Sure couldn't hurt?
