I am hoping i get help with this. i bought a 2002 ford excursion limited a few months ago. Its a great truck really. I want to restore it to f350 specifications! i have about 6000 to spend. i already have two cherry axles from a 1979 ford f250. both Dana 60's reverse cut high pinion. Everything! I want to go forward with this. Make this awesome truck into a full fledged one ton rig! Give me some advice on everything I need to do.

First of all, WELCOME to the X-Files!

Axles from a '79? And your e-mail said the rear '79 axle has drum brakes? I don't want to say it "can't" be done, but you're talking a heck of a lot of work to make those axles fit ... spring perches and brake mods. Also, your Excursion's drivetrain computer relies on info from at least one sensor in the rear axle. I doubt that you can add that modification to the 1979 axle. The ABS may also rely on inputs of individual wheel rotation. Once the '79 axles are installed, and if everything is made to operate correctly, you've devalued the X in regards to trade-in ... but that assumes any perspective buyer realizes the changes before buying. Forgive me, but I am at a loss as to what you might gain from using the '79 axles.

One more thing. There used to be a time that all 8-lug wheels would fit any other brand. Not so anymore. So you'd also need new wheels with the older bolt pattern.

If you're interested in getting your X to (current) F350 spec's or for it to ride like an F350, about all you really need to do is swap out the leaf springs ... probably the spring blocks, too. This will gain you some lift and a stiffer suspension. I don't have the data on all the various "spring codes" Ford has used on the SuperDuty line-up of trucks, but a search of this forum (and maybe a couple other forums) will get you that info quickly. A good source for used leaf springs are 4x4 shops. I imagine there might be a few of those in Honolulu. Even if you use the '79 axles, you'll still need to swap out the leaf springs for that F350-like suspension.
