Hi everyone,
A few weeks back I submitted a post asking about the difference between the V8 and the V10 as well as the height of the X. Well, I fianlly took the plunge this weekend and bought a used 2004 Limited V10 4x4 with 18K on the odometer. I paid 32K plus tax and license.
I was really excited about the purchase and still am. I love the way it looks, the room and all the amenities. What worries me now is the gas mileage and the thought of filling up more frequently than I had anticpated. Before I bought it I knew that the MPG was about 10-13 in the city. But when I was warming it up and letting the ice melt off of it this AM, I actually saw the gas needle move down. That was sobbering!
I topped the tank off saturday night and reset the trip odometer to 0. As of tonight, I've used over a quarter of a tank and have gone 55 miles of in town driving (RPM's are below 2K and I baby it). According to the trip/MPG computer I'm getting 11 MPG in town. Based on information I got from this website, I figured out that have the 3.73 gear ratio so I guess my mileage could be worse.
I love my X and have wanted one for a long time. I average only about 5-6K miles a year so the Diesel didn't seem like a good choice for me. I've read the posts about tire pressure being at 60 PSI and will check the Air Cleaner to make sure it's clean. Any other suggestions? I confese I'm having some buyer remorse based soley on the MPG and I don't want that to be the case.
Any additional suggestions for increased MPG would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks everyone! :-)

Congrats on the new X.
I know you will love your truck as much as we do. During the winter at least over here on the east coast our gas mileage is worse with the funky additives. 11 mpg city driving is not bad. Make sure the air filter is clean or buy a replacement air intake system. I saw a little oner 1 mpg gain. I have 4.30 gears and am getting around 9 this winter....13 hgwy.

Welcome to the forum and the Excursion fold. Don't sweat the MPG much. There are a ton of pickup trucks out there getting worse. My old 5.8L (351Cu.in.) gas V8 F350 never got over 10 MPG, no matter where or how I drove it ... and it weighed 2K pounds LESS than my '01 V10 Excursion. Most folks I've spoken to with F150s get about the same.
I crunched some numbers on the diesels, too. After taking into account the premium price asked for a diesel engine, the higher maintenance costs, and that diesel fuel sells at a higher price than gasoline around here, I would have to drive the diesel about 190K miles BEFORE any actual savings would be seen over the V10. I am way tired of a vehicle by that time. If I get another used X later on, I'll shop for an '05, but will most likely stick to one with a V10. |

CON-grats....
Average out the mpg with the safety factor from the SIZE and weight of the Beast !!!
We didn't buy these for MPG.... but we can take solace in that we can carry just about everything, INCLUDING the kitchen sink...
the REAL negative is that you can carry just about everything....
including the Mother-in-law....
but at least you can sit her WAY back there now !!!!!

This is my first time posting. I recently picked up a loaded 02 V10.
My rig befrore this one was a 99 3/4ton 454 Suburban with the 3:73 locker rear end ( I miss that locker). That only got 8-10 in town and maybe 12 on the road with a tail wind. I have to admit the X gets a little better milage overall, not much but some. Just turn the meter from MPG to miles left or just turn it off. It is a running avarage any way and not a indication of the current MPG unless you reset it each time out or at each refill. My wife idles alot while waiting for the kids to get out of school and if I reset it at the fill and drive home, she drives about a mile a day and idles for 15+ min. The meter reads about 3 MPG . Like it was said before it is not the MPG, but what you do with it.
I have 8 kids and 6 travel with us all the time. We tow a 28" trailer. I needed the extra space. Extra space = less "Stop touching me" and a more enjoyable ride. Bigger truck = I bought as much saftey I could for my family.

I bought my X for the room and saftey factor. I put up with the $50-$80 a week for those reasons. The saftey and room out weigh the fuel costs by far.
GOT 8KIDS, I'm laughing about the "stop touching me" factor, I have six children under 12. I guess 6 is slacking in your neighborhood. |

I wanted to thank everyone for their replies and the warm welcome!
After a week of driving my X, I'm down to half a tank with 151miles on it. I average about 9+ in city (not the 11 I first listed) and around 15 Hwy. On a full tank I should easily be able to fill it once every two weeks or so. This is what I had originally thought and am glad to see that I was correct.
I love my X. I love driving it, love the room for the kids (2 plus one on the way) I feel safe in it and I love the way that it looks. A week later, I do NOT have buyers remorse, I just needed to adjust from driving a vehicle that got roughly 20 MPG city to the X. I woudn't go back if given the opportunity.
Again, thanks for the replies, not only is the forum very informative but everyone is also friendly.
