I have a 2000 Powerstroke and am getting 13-15 mpg in a mix of hilly Southern California driving and freeways.

Does a chip change the shift points of the transmission?
My X seems to like to shift later than needed by just a bit, but can be fooled into shifting to a higher gear by playing with the accellerator pedal near the shift point.

So will a chip help with this? The SCMT website seems to dance around the question of whether it will actually help increase my mileage.

Yes. The SCMT will optimize (change) shift quality and points.

By increasing timing you'll see a power and fuel economy increase too.

A PSD without a SCMT (or something similar) IMHO is just another diesel. Get a tuner or chip and really wake that baby up!

I have to agree !!!

The SCMT changed the function of our '02 7.3L psd to a much better operating vehicle... but as far as fuel mileage savings - I think there was about a 2-5 mpg increase during the VERY FEW times I didn't have my foot in it enjoying the extra performance and better shifting....

The other mod I would REALLY recomend is the Helwigg rear sway bar - I got it for $121 and $18 third day shipping from JC Whitney... Really helped the EX handle the corners AND the straight line side to side undulations...

Both mods WELL worth it !

a chip will lower voltage to the trans pressure solenoid and bump pressure up.this is all the idiots that program can possibly do.the shift timing can be changed, but,i have yet to see any of these guys figure it out.(TTS is an exception)these guys will tell you that after you buy their chip, the trans part is ok with their mods.wrong.think about it,your transmission(as Ford claims)is equal to 10 percent more than the horsepower you have.drop that chip in(50hp,80hp,100hp,125hp.)what do you think?will 5pounds of pressure save this trans(thats all they can give you)?as far as mileage, yes it works, better,as far as fun, yes, lots of fun.towing in the mild mode(50horsepower max)it makes a big difference,as long as you watch your exhaust temp.but if you want to play with the chip(damn, its fun)you must address the trans.
