Last night, I stomped on the pedal of my 2002 stock PSD Ex. When I looked at the rearview mirror, I noticed that I covered the cars behind me with a cloud of dark smoke from the exhaust. Is this normal for diesel vehicles? It does not smoke while the vehicle is idling. Thanks,

Has it been awhile since you hammered it last? Is it all stock or modified?

This is the first time I ever hammered it. It's a completely stock 2002, but after reading these forums, that will not last for long. I'll start with a programmer (lowest setting of course) and hope that tranny does not crumble. By the way, how do I find out what transmission I have? Good thing I purchased an extended warranty. I'll try to find out how to change the setting on my system to post some pictures. |

If it's the first time you got into the accelerator the truck probably runs alot better now as you probably just cleaned off the top of the pistons Your tranny is the 4R100 just like the rest of the 99-2003 automatics mated with the 7.3L engine.
You can add a programmer but I'd recommend at least an Exhaust Gas Temperature gaure or Pyrometer which it is better knownmyou don't want the EGT's to get too high especially if you're towing with the programming in 80 Horse or better setting.

I may have to clean those pistons a bit more often. I have read several of the messages about programmers and most seem to caution people about these gadgets. I e-mailed some of the companies referenced in these forums and two responded that their programmer would not damage my transmission. Instead, they claimed that it's longevity and performance would increase at the low hp levels. I don't plan to pull any loads. My wife drives it most of the time and I drive a Civic. Where could I get an easy-to-install pyrometer? Also, what temperatures are unsafe? |

We've had the Superchips Microtuner for some years now on our Powerstroke Diesels, you get better performance, mileage and the tranny shifts alot better.
I tow with the programming installed but I keep the speeds under 65 MPH.
Installing the Pyrometer you have to drill and tap into the right exhaust manifold and run the line into the cab to the gauge.
I recommend Dieselsite to get your gauges,programmer/s and anything else you need for upgrading your Excursion,Bob Riley and his wife Sheryl are Top Notch people to do business with, been purchasing from them for 3 years now So your Excursion is stock eh? How much budget you think your wife will give you to improve upon the performance, better MPGs and driveability?
