guys,

I have an 02 v-10 xlt prem ex..It has 26,000 miles on it. Babied every mile..Never ever driven short distances at all. I always make sure to get the motor warmed up by driving her at leat 20 miles when I do drive it. On Saturday my wife and I bought a BMW 745 Li and I had to move the Ex out of the garage. I started her up after her sitting for about 3 weeks and a huge nest and all kinds of mice flew out of the tailpipe. After starting it, the V-10 is making a huge knocking sound and is blowing blue oil filled smoke out of the tailpipe as well..I drove my wife to pick her car up and it is about a 30 mile roundtrip to the dealership. I ck'd the oil before start up and it was full. I ck'd it again after the 30 mile trip and it was down over 1 qt. What could be wrong with the engine? This makes me just sick..My factory warranty is up. I never knew I had a mice problem...

Any help would would be greatly appreciated...

Scott

Ok, I suppose it is easy to jump to the worst conclusions first as the symptoms sound truly awful. But, lets think about this a moment. Is it possible that any of the rodents made into one or more cylinders, causing a ring or valve seat problem? Now, I am using my dated knowledge of catalytic converter construction, but if they are much like they used to be, I am doubtful. Could the rodents have compromised the PCV apparatus by chewing or gnawing on the hoses, etc.? More likely. Check all hoses under the hood and make sure that none of them (large or small) have been compromised by rodent chewing. Rats and mice love to chew just for the sake of chewing and rubber hoses and belts seem to be prefered targets for the little beasts. Keep us posted.

I've been thinking about this overnight and I have some questions. Did the "nest" blow out upon startup or was it shortly after? Was there a sound that might be like a "pop" or even something more dramatic? If it took a buildup of pressure to blow it out, I'm afraid that there is the possiblity of ring or valvetrain damage due to "reverse" compression. I know that this is not good news, but I think it does represent the worst case scenario. Hopefully it is something much less costly. Good luck!

Bill,

There was a semi loud pop...That's how I found the huge nest and mice bodies all over the side of the garage...I took the Ex to the dealer and they to advised possible valve and internal eng. dmg from backpressure??

Come On, Scott...... You can't leave us hanging!! Any formal Diag. yet?

When we were young we had mice make a nest in the cylinder of the motor of our speed boat. That was a big surprise when we tore down the motor one spring.

However that was two stroke outboard motor sitting in the corner of the shed. From that year forward, stored with the piston TDC.

I used the term "reverse compression", back pressure is same conclusion. I was afraid of that. It's really frustrating to find out the damage that can be done by the smallest of critters. Don't know how to advise beyond what I've already noted. I'd be putting out some type of traps, especially during the cold weather months as they are generally just looking for shelter from the cold and something to eat. Amazing that they thought the tailpipe of an Excursion was the perfect "hidey-hole". Live and learn, I suppose.

Guys,

Thanks for all of the input. My EX is in Surgery this AM. She is basically getting a new 6.8L Engine. The mechanic at the Ford Dealer advised he would actually have to tear into the engine to see what all was damaged. I gave a auth. up to 2,500.00 for the repairs and then I would start asking questions. I'm not very motor knowledgable so I am at a huge disadvantage.

I have already put d-con down all over my garage. I've also cut out a cover for the tailpipe once she gets back home. We live in a newer subdivision and there has been a lot next to us that has finally been dug up and construction is underway. I think this is where the mice/vermin came from. I work at home and have a Co. Car I drive. The Ex really only gets driven when the family all goes somewhere together, which is rare or when we pull my boat around, again this is rare as I have a permanant slip at Lake Cumberland for it. Once I get the final details I will post again. They said they would have it at least a few days.

Guys,

Got the Ex back yesterday...All new rings and she had a valve job. Runs fine at this point. Man did I learn a lesson about mice...I really like my service advisor as well. I gave them auth up to 2,500.00. They called me every step of the way and did not take advantage of my auth. I'm glad i did not have to spend near the 2,500.00.

Thanks for the help...
