John an option to the harsh ride would be is to remove your 2000-2002 top spring bumpstops and upgrade to the 2003-2005 stops which are much softer and are 1/4"-1/3" shorter.

Ford Part is # 2C7Z 3020 AA but I'd double check with the dealer that the number has not been revised to a newer number, the bumpstop is a 2 bolt design in a cone shape.

I am going to try the rancho shocks first and see how that works. I will then look on to modifying the bumpers. I think the shocks will be the ticket since I test drove a few other 2000 and 2001 units and they all were a lot better then this one. I asumed it would be something easy like shocks so I took the unit that was a few thousand less then the other comparible ones.

Changing the shocks will be fine but your springs will still be riding against the bumpstops no matter what unless you knock a ring or two off them which will give a little more travel but that could make it rougher when you tag potholes and/or curbs.

The revised bumpstops are like $15 apiece fyi

Shocks are on the way, and so is the Hellwig anti-sway bar. Figured I might as well do both right away, and since JC Whitney has free shipping right now... well just another good excuse to spend money.

As for the bump stops, do those need to be purchased from a ford dealer or can I get them elsewhere, like on-line?

The swaybar will definitely help alot

You can purchase the revised bumpstops from the Ford dealer or one of the discount OEM Parts houses.

The only other aftermarket bumpstop I know of is from Timbren but I'd use them on the rear axle for help with overloading conditions like too much tongue weight.

Listen to Bill, the bumpstops are the problem. Shocks will help once the suspension has room to move. Right now, you are riding on the rubber blocks, hence the stiff ride. Do both and you'll be much happier. Swap the front springs to U,V or X code springs and you'll be absolutely amazed!
