I just noticed this last night. Hopefully someone has a thought...

When I put the X in reverse the reverse sensor "off" light/button on the dash comes on/lights up and stays on. As long as I am in reverse...when I push the button it will not go off. But when I shift out of reverse... after a couple of pushes the light will go off. And it does not illuminate again until I put the X in reverse.

And when this problem happens the sensor is truly off as I do not get a tone when I am backing up close to an object.

It ONLY happens when I put the X in reverse. I need my rear sensor the be ON. It was working absolutely perfectly before last night.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a sensor went south or a wire came loose from one of them....

Did you happen to get it washed right before it failed ?
I always look back to what happened JUST before something failed and more times than not...
THAT'S what did it ????

good luck !

That's a new one to me CS,maybe it's a wiring/sensor glitch on the transmission or perhaps in the steering column wire harness pack?
I'll have to ask about that one.

I have the same problem with mine. It happens in two different situations. One is when salt residue dries on the sensor lenses, and the other is after I power-wash it, I think water is getting inside one or more of the sensors. It usually lasts until we get warmer weather and they can dry out completely. I have suffered with this, for the last two winters. Hope this helps.

When we wash the Excursion during the springtime the sensors(at least on ours) sticks when in reverse like we've just backed up on a Honda or something but turns right off once it's set in park or in drive.

Most likely water on the eye.

Doug and Mustang,

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I figured I was not the first.

It is definitely cold, wet and salty here in Chcago. So I will wait for the temp to get in the 40's or so and see what happens. Hopefully the problem will go away just like it came.

Doug,

I just have to ask again for clarification.

When your sensor is malfunctioning does it just beep non-stop when the gear is in reverse (I have had this happen is snow/ice) OR when you have shifted in reverse does the "off" light on the dash illuminate as if you pushed the button to switch the sensor off. The sensor does not make a sound. It turns itself off. This is what I am currently refering to (check my earlier post). It is very strange.

It is still happening and before I sit it out for a while I wanted to ensure someone else had this SAME problem go away after the weather warmed and dried up.

UPDATE......Ok..now this is weird. Today is rainy, thunderstorms, golf ball size hail, tornado watch and guess what? When I backed in at home the sensor is working fine! This is nuts! It has been "off" with zero beeps for a full month.

I will let you know how long it works...

The reverse sensor feature probably has been the only glitchy issue with our Excursion but we've learned to live with it for the most part

In my situation I've had three diferent things happen. I've had it beep really fast when put in reverse and then it turns itself off. I've had it beep constant when put in reverse and then shut off. Then the worst of all, I've had it shut itself off and not beep at all when put in reverse (which is very disheartening when backing up to fence at work and you don't realize the sensor is off). All three of these only happen in, or right after wet weather. It seems to straighten out within a few day after the weather drying out. I've never had any problems in the dry weather.
