Well I think I have narrowed it down to either a MBRP or Magnaflow T-409 SS system. I now have two questions. First, I am planning on running a mild chip just for towing and fuel economy. Do I need a 4" down pipe or would a 3.5" be better? I am going to replace the down pipe so which one I use does not make a difference.
Second, I was going to get a MBRP system, but I have found a Magnaflow turbo back 3.5" down pipe, 4" main system with a 5" stainless tip for $440 to the door. So since I want the performance with-out too much increased sound (wife's vehicle) will the Magnaflow system be the best ticket?

Well then I guess I will have to go with a MBRP system, even though it is going to be hard to get anywhere near the price I found on that Magnaflow system. Looks like the best I have found so far will put me around $540 with a SS tip. I guess you get what you pay for. So anyone with an inside scoop on a good deal for a MBRP exhaust system

Are you interested in MBRP "Aluminized" or SS "T-409" ?
The Aluminized with the SS tip can be shipped for about $450 but if you're in the salted wintry roads you may wanna stay with T-409 at the minimum.
If you wanna take the chance with the Magnaflow setup for that sweet price and hope she can deal with the drone go for it but it does sound really good on the outside I probably researched which exhaust system I chose for a few weeks I'm guessing as I strongly considered potential drone probs for the wife and kids (1 & 3) at the time so if you'd like to continue the discussion I'll do what I can to help with the right decision.

What exactly is the drone sound and when does it pop up. I have read some discussions on it on thedieselstop. Some people said it was al lthe time, others did not notice it at all and others only had it under heavy tow.
Also I will have to go with the T-409 since we at times have more salt then snow on the roads. nothing like the crunching of salt under the tires as you drive down the road.
If it was my driver I would get the Magnaflow but if the sound of it is too bad I would never hear the end of replacing the factory exhaust.

The best way I can describe "drone" is the Low Frequency sounds that are emitted from the exhaust system, tires, engine, etc and is somewhat injected into the cabin of the truck/Excursion at various RPM's/speeds.
If the reverberation is bad enough to the ears/sensory system it can cause discomforts like dizziness, confusion, sleepiness, etc.
Have you seen the one episode of Myth Busters when they tested Low Frequency sounds?well that's a very good example of what drone really is so to speak Bill

I have found a very in depth discussion on thedieselstop about the exhaust drone in the excursion. It looks like by fliping around the muffler and the straight pipe in front of it you can move the drone, if it even is present, to a non-normal cruising rpm range. It also looks like the Magnaflow is the closest to factory sound which is very important to my wife. She does not want to sound like some hot rod running down the road. Looks like I will go with the Magnaflow system after all.

As far as Diesel's are concerned and Gas Engine for that matter, the bigger the exhaust the less the restriction you have hence more horsepower. So whether or not you have a stock stroke or lite to heavy mods a bigger exhaust is always better. See an engine is, is a large pump... the faster you pump air (air n fuel) in and the faster and less restriction you pump that air out the more power you are making. Well I hope that this helps you guys.
