Can anyone recommend an upgrade for the stock serpentine belt on the V10, I have a 2004 with the 6.8 and the belt squeals like a stuck pig when shifting at ....well, ...higher RPMS....
I had heard my buddy speak highly about the Gatorback from Goodyear on his little F150 Triton, but can't get a part number for the 2004 V10. Anyone have any suggestions? The local Goodyear Svc Mgr was less helpful than an Autozone employee at closing time
Thanks in advance!

Eric I pulled up the part number for the Goodyear Poly-V belt but it is for a 2003 not sure if it'll be the same for 2004 models.
#4060990 (Poly-V, w/AC)
Some have used belt dressing but I've found in some cases to make it worse and not fix the problem,I'd suggest a new belt altogether.
I don't get my head under the hoods of many V10's but I'd check the idler pulley/tensioner to be sure it's not cocked or any of the other belt driven components.

I also just replaced my belt with a Gatorback belt before leaving for Florida for two weeks and no noise or problems. It was a easy job with a tool from AutoZone in there parking lot.

Scott what tool is needed to crank on the tensioner to get the belt on and off? I know on the 7.3L's we use a 1/2" drive breaker bar.

CHP, you recommended belt dressing.....
remember the word moderation if you use that stuff
let's say a "buddy" years ago was embarrased by the squeal in his NICE Jeep 5.9 Limited...
let's say he tried some belt dressing and used the ole logic...
"If a little does good, a lot will do betta"
let's say that SOME slip is preferred...
cuz the belt SNAPPED about two blocks down the road because of TOO much grip

Yeah when I see the cans of belt dressing in the auto parts store it sorta makes me cringe but it is a quick band aid but not a long term fix in any way so yeah use that stuff in moderation.
Too much slip and the belt/s will glaze from the heat then crack then snap, proper tension is the best measure for long life on belts.

CHP, and all,
The Goodyear part number 4060990 is for the six rib 99" long Gatorback. It is the same for the 2004, and OH MY FREAKIN GOD WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!
Took about 10 minutes to install.. had to find something to stand on No squeal during upshifts, and I swear it is quieter at idle. $29 bucks well spent, I even got one for the wife's explorer.
Thanks for all the input! |

Autozone, they had the 99 in stock for the Ex, but had to special order the Explorer belt. Goodyear wanted $54 for special order. |
