After a couple of months of research I finally made the plunge and purchased a 2001 Limited PSD. The truck when I bought it has 3 guages, Pyrometer, Oil Temp and Tranny Temp. After 2 weeks with the truck I noticed the Pyrometer temp running into the yellow and then into the red. Now the sensor is running backwards. At an idle and at low speeds it seems to work, but when you get into the truck or above 70 miles an hour it goes to 1000 degrees. Has anyone had this problem before? It is an ISS gauge. Not certain if it the probe or the electonic box that the sensor attaches to. I really enjoy the Forum. I am new to diesels so I will be asking many questions.

Hello Mizzuman and welcome to the Excursion forums

I'd double check the connections running from the pyro down to the thermocouple which can be traced down to the passengers side exhaust manifold(pre turbo) or post turbo which would usually be on the exhaust downpipe coming from the back of the turbocharger.

Sometimes the thermocouple can go bad,the connections can cause erratic behavior or the Pyrometer itself is done.

I know a few years back ISSPRO had a technical service bulletin on the pyrometers amplifier box but that would only cause a +100 degree display over the true reading.

Normal temps should stay within 300 to 1000* if you get on the accelerator hard.

I wonder if there was a performance chip left on the Excursions processor?

Anyone else care to chime in?

Bill

Hey mizzuman,
Welcome to the forums. Lot's of good advice here. I'd follow Bill's lead and check the harness in the engine compartment, maybe it has rubbed through the coating and is shorting out somewhere. If you have a voltmeter handy you could check the resistance in the wiring by removing the pyro gauge. Not sure what normal ohm reading would be for the type gauge/harness you have. Maybe some of the other members could chime in that have these gauges on their rides. Goodluck and hope these suggestions help. Keep us posted

Well I fianally talked to a tech at ISSPRO. Everything he suggested to check I already did. Soooo, I guess I will be purchasing a new Pyrometer. Any suggestions as to the best place to purchase on the net? I want to keep the gauge package the same. I currently have the 3607T.

I've purchased from DIS from a number of years and always have had a positive outcome, here's a LINK to their ISSPRO lineup

Also check out the gauges from ITP and DPP for Autometer and Di-Pricol.
