Just upgraded my 01 X with the later style tow mirrors that have the lights on the outer edge. My previous mirrors were non-tow style but had the heat and blinker feature. The new tow mirrors bolted right on and the blinkers work, but I'm thinking the lower portion of the lighted area on the mirror edge is supposed to light up also, perhaps with the parking lights on? I gather I have no wiring for that feature since it did not exist on my previous mirrors. So my questions are:

1. Can someone with the new style tow mirrors with heat and lights explain to me what the lights on the mirror edge are for (i.e., top portion is blinker, lower portion is for ?).

2. If I want to wire up the lower portion to do what it is supposed to do, where are the wires to tap into to? (if the lower portion is for parking lamps, where is the panel to splice parking lamp wires for each mirror?)

Thanx.

Keith,

This is what I can tell you (excuse my laymen terms). This week I upgraded my 2003 OEM heated, signal mirror to the newer heated, signal, running light mirror. You are correct they bolt right on and when you connect the circuit to the existing wiring the "running light" on the mirror does not light up. There is an additional wire in the new mirror connnection that does does not match up with your existing wiring/connection.

I had an aftermarket shop do my install and they tapped into my head lamp wiring to get this "extra" wire connected. So now the top portion of the mirror light is a turn signal and the lower portion is a row of 4 or so leds that light up when my lights are on. It looks really cool (day and night) and I like it a lot. My wife loves it.

I can't help you with exact locations for the tap in but the aftermarket guy did say that the best wire to use with the most reliable voltage source was the head lamp wire.

When I installed the lighted moose-ear mirrors on mine, I tapped the running lights (answer to question #1) into the parking light feed at the dashboard light switch (answer to #2). I believe the brown wire coming out of the switch was the wire I used.

Do a search here and at other forums, and you'll find a ton of info about this.

Got the mirror lights wired up. Funny thing was I did not read your post Landyot prior to wiring:

"When I installed the lighted moose-ear mirrors on mine, I tapped the running lights (answer to question #1) into the parking light feed at the dashboard light switch (answer to #2). I believe the brown wire coming out of the switch was the wire I used. "

That's exactly what I did - I got out the voltmeter to figure out which wire was switched on when the light switch is turned to parking lamp (& headlights for that matter). Turned out to be a white wire with a red or orange stripe. I wired the drivers side 1st, spliced it onto this white wire with one of those tap in clips from Radio Shack, then ran the wire to the passenger side and tapped it into the wire running to the drivers side (not enough give in that OEM white/red wire in the wiring harness). Yes indeed, it is a brown wire on the new mirrors that I spliced onto with some more of those tap in clips. Turned on the switch and voila! Lights work.

NOW, SOMETHING STRANGE HAPPENED! While I was upside down looking up under the steering wheel, I must have touched a wire or something because the interior lights came on all of a sudden. The passenger side door was open the whole time, but the lights had timed out and shut off, then when I was taping the new wire out of the way, I heard a click, then the interior lights came on, and I noticed my trailer brake contol lights came on too. Still can't figure out why this happened, but what followed still has me baffled.

Initially, I had the other connector on the headlight switch assembly disconnected, so when I turned on the lights to test the mirror lights, the overhead console display shut off. I then realized that the other connector was disconnected (the one that controls the dash lights) and reconnected it. Still had the same problem, so I disconnected the entire headlight switch, turned the key on and off a few times thinking I needed to reset something, then reconnected the headlight switch assembly. At this point, I disconnected my brake contoller. I then turned the headlight switch on and everything worked as it should. I reconnected the brake controller and still everything worked as it should, so I guess I cleared up whatever problem I created.

Last question now. I just noticed when I turn the key to the on position prior to engaging the starter and leave it there for a few seconds, I hear this crunch noise coming from the drivers side front, just in front of the radiator area towards the grill. Did I short something out to cause a problem because I have never noticed this noise before? Or is this a normal noise? I've owned this X for 2 years now and never noticed this noise, so I'm thinking somehow I created this problem while wiring the mirrors - makes absolutely no sense why this would happen, perhaps it is just coincidence?

Thanx to all for your info and advice.
