I was trying to perform my first maintenance on my ’03 Ex. It’s the 6.0 with just a little over 14,000 mile on it. I changed the oil and the top fuel filter with no problems. I was trying to change the water separator filter when I ran into a huge mess. Seems that I cross threaded the filter cap when I was trying to get it back on. I was finally able to correct the problem, but only after I drained a couple of gallons of diesel on the ground. Is there a way to shut off the fuel flow to change the separator filter or do you just have to work fast as the diesel drains?

Choppercop I have a better alernative than having to tangle with the stock PITB 6.0L fuel filter setup.

It's the Dahl 100 Fuel filter/water separator system which Bob Riley at Dieselsite.com carries.

Here's the URL for more information; http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=411

Bill, Thanks for the sugestion. Is it used in place of the factory water separator? Would I by-pass the factory one with this. If so how would that affect the warrenty?

Sorry for all the questions....

The Dahl 100 doesn't replace the stock water separator it just prevents water from getting to the front.

To my knowledge it will not void warranty in fact one may receive praise

It installs just prior to the stock fuel pump and there's no other modifications to make beyond that point.

If there's questions please do post em as everyone can chip in with their experience

The HFCM (Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module) is the name Ford calls Fuel-Water Separator. It is built by Parker-Racor in California.

The HFCM includes a check valve to prevent diesel flow when you remove fuel-water separator filter. All you should need to do prior to removing filter is to remove the drain plug (allen wrench). Let it drain down before removing big filter cap.

If the filter leaks out more than the contents of housing (about 1/2 quart), the check valve must not be working. I would return the truck to dealer for warranty replacment of HFCM.

By the way, the Parker-Racor filters are really among the best available anywhere. I would not replace it or supplement it. You might starve the fuel pump if you restrict the inlet.

Ha - then THAT'S what's wrong with mine....
everyone said it would only drain a bit tand then stop....

I've filled up two 3 liter bottles from mine before I put the plug back in under a SHOWER of fuel....
and nary a drop of H2O !!!

oh well... time for another visit with the service advisor...

I knew there had to be a way to shut off the fuel flow. Thanks for the info..Next time I want to start a project, I'll ask first.. Speaking of asking first, has anyone tried the ride-rite air bags from Firestone?
