Need to replace my shocks.
Would like some advice as to what model would be best purchasing.
Like to go with RANCHO, but am not sure what one 9000x, RSX, or 5000.
Don't do any towing or real off roading.
I welcome your comments / advice.

I talked with a couple of guys at the local 4wheel Parts store here in Dallas on Sat. and they both recommeded the MX6 shocks. They like them because they're adjustable by turning a knob on each shock to the desired setting. This allows you to "tune" your shocks based on the type of driving you will be doing.

Best of all, they are $65 each.

I purchased the 9 position Rancho 9000X shocks from the Plano 4 Wheel Parts store in Sept 2002 and we've loved the shocks since they went on

How much did those Rancho's set you back?

I think they were like $260 at that time but I wasn't waiting for a deal as the stock shocks had to come off at any cost!

Check with www.SamsOffRoad.com as they may have one of their screaming sales going on

Has any one had any experience with the RSX? I like that it is an adaptive shock. Don't think that I would be changing settings if I were to get the 9000X. While I have adjustable suspension on my mountain bike and change the settings during rides, I am not sure that this would be something I would be doing with the X. Took CHP’s advice and went to Sams off Road.com they have very good prices on these shocks with free shipping.
I eagerly await your input!

I agree wholeheartedly. I own an Offroad shop (hence the username...go fig'r) too and I sell a LOT of the MX6 shocks for Jeep guys. One of the reasons is that the term "ride quality" is so subjective. Some people like it more firm...others more soft. I get negative and positive comments both ways on ALL of the shocks that I sell except for the MX6s. I have had them on my Jeep for two years now and they ride REALLY well. I liked them so much that I put them on the rear of my Ex (due to varying trailer loads) and am running Bilsteins on the front. On setting '1' in the rear, it's slightly softer than the Bilsteins in the front. On setting 2 and 3 they seem to match unloaded. When I pulled my trailer this weekend to Moab, I set them at 6 to reduce the trailer bounce over our high-speed whoops that we have in the rural by-ways of Northern AZ. A really excellent shock, in my opinion, and I buy a LOT of shocks on a yearly basis!

BTW, just for archive purposes, I found that the MX6 shocks for the front of a 4" lifted F250(15"C/25"E) worked really well for the back of my 2wd Excursion. Matches the stockers within 1/2". All you have to do is press the bar pins out of the stockers and install them into the MX6 upper loops. Everything else is an easy deal.

PS: Also, RS9k shocks adjust only the rebound...not both the compression and rebound like the MX6 does. Also, the MX6 is gas-charged...less fade on washboard roads that way.

CHPMustang,
My 9000x shocks are due in today from Sam's Off Road. Can you give me any advice / base line as to where to start with the settings?

James if your Excursion is a 4x4 with stock size tire/wheels I'd set the front set at 3 and the rear set at 4,I've found that to be a real good medium to start at

To install the fronts we turned the wheels out to full lock which provided plenty o' room to remove the stockers and install the Ranchos.

Also note the stock shocks are somewhat pressurized which is why I remove the lower bolts first to prevent the tops from jamming up in the wheel well.

I'll be checking in throughout the day if you run into a jam

Thanks for the advice!
You are truly an asset to this forum!
Hope that I have no trouble w/ the install.
Will not be able to install that shocks till after the kids go to sleep.
Hope to be done by midnite.
