What is the correct way to have the transmission fluid ? I have read it should be pumped out and leave the filter in place.

Then how is the filter changed? I paid a shop to change mine ... drain fluid from the tranny and the torque converter (rotate the crank to get all of the fluid from the converter), blow out the lines to the fluid cooler, and replace the filter.

Here's a link to a tech article on another forum.

Just got back from the ford dealer. Had the transmission service. They power flush the system and vacuum the system out. Gets all the old fluid out. Ford does not remove the filter, the flush and vacuum cleans it also.
