Got a question on the A/C here. Seems kind of weird, but the front air is much colder when the rear air is turned on at the same time (even though there are seperate evaporators I think)...otherwise it's just not that cold. I took a look at the condenser and it looks pretty clean, but there might be some residue on it. Could this cause it not to cool as well, especially when not moving? What do you recommend as a degreaser to clean it? I just evacuated the entire system down to about 15" hg and then charged it up to about 40psi on the low side, so it should have plenty of refrigerant in it. What do you guys think?

Hi Matt, whats happening is the compressor is staying locked in for longer cycles when both evaporators are on thus is does get colder.
Every spring/early summer as a habit I spray the condensor with simple green let it soak for a few minutes then rinse off the dirt, bugs, debris with a garden hose using a spray gun attachment.

Here's the Ford specs for the Excursion AC system.

A/C Cycling Switch
Open pressure 152-165 kPa (22-24 psi)
Close pressure 317 kPa (46 psi) maximum

Pressure Cutoff Switch
Open status 2,999-3,275 kPa (435-475 psi)
Closed status 1,586-1,999 kPa (230-290 psi)

Refrigerant Lubricant and Capacity
414 ml (14 oz)

Refrigerant and Capacity
Capacity with auxiliary climate control 1.93 kg (68 oz)

Thanks for the tip. I'll clean it up tonight when I get home and see if it helps. I usually run the rear air anyway, even if there's nobody back there so it's not a big deal. I don't think it makes any difference on my fuel economy, so what the heck, eh?

Another thing I experimented with was I installed a 180 elbow to prevent any hot coolant from entering the rear heater core which did benny additional temp drops system wide.

The heater control valve only shuts off hot coolant to the front heater core and not the rear.

How did you do the install? I mean, what sort of fitting did you use? I had a hole in the high pressure line to the back evaporator. Ford changed these lines from one piece supply and one piece return to 2 piece supply and 2 piece return (maybe for serviceablility, I don't know) so if you have a one piece go bad, you have to replace both supply and return to tune of about $500 for the parts. I cut out the bad area and flared in a new piece of copper. Seems to have done the trick.

I have not had to do any AC repairs on the Excursion.

Only thing I installed on the rear was a 3/4"ID 180 hose elbow, two couplers and 4 screw clamps.
