My 05 X did exactly the same thing you describe. The noise reduction was accompanied by a small reduction on the idle speed. At first the problem only happened intermitently. After a while, the idle speed started oscillating between 500 and 900 RPM (low noise at the low RPM and normal at the higher RPM), occasionally almost stalling at the low RPM. A few weeks later the oscillacion started to occur at speed, especially while trying to hold a constatnt speed (it drove the cruise control nuts). Eventually, about 3 months ago, the problem occur often enough that i was able to take it to the dealer and showed them the problem. They told me it had a bad coil of some kind (not ignition since diesels don't have one, probably something to do with the injectors). That fix it!

Hope that helps.

Ok, I looked for and found my receipt from the Ford dealer. It wasn't any kind of a coil ( oops!!, that was on another vehicle). They Replaced two parts on the Excursion:

4C3Z-9F452-A VALVE A 152613 (EGR Valve I think)
4C3Z-9J460-A SENSOR 157727 (Don't know which sensor it is)

I had the same symptom the other day with my 2005 6.0 Excursion with 7500 miles. I don't honestly think it is the oil. I think it is the EGR valve acting up.

I had the same thing. It was BPV. There was a recall on it. It runs great again.

Im going to pick up a new '05 in the next day or two and noticed while test driving them that some seem louder that others. Hopefully mine will start out quiet

Sorry for not replying sooner my computer had a mind of its on. Victor, your description is exactly what I have experienced. I also noticed that it would momentarily idle rough before it would become noisy. While the truck was behaving in the manner you had described, the truck felt like it lacked power and not as responsive. I have changed the oil but it still occurs though sporadically. I will talk to my dealer regarding the EGR and BPV.
Thanks for everyones suggestions.
