I'm just absolutely enamored with the towing capability of this thing. Took my first road trip with a 5k Jeep on a 2.5k trailer this weekend to Moab, UT from Phoenix and am VERY impressed with even the stock towing capability!!! I did the same trip in April for Easter Jeep Safari towing the same trailer with my 6.5L '96 Chevy. Not only did the 7.5 hour trip take 12 hours, I also depleted most of the remaining ozone layer above the Navajo Reservation and Monument Valley with the column of black smoke behind me while I was crusing uphill in 2nd gear and 30mph. Same trip, same load, and same road worked out to only 7 hours this time...a personal best even when driving the Jeep by itself the last few years (460 miles one way). I attribute the 1/2 hour gain to the fact that I never stopped for fuel, lol. I still had nearly a quarter tank left when I arrived Moab, averaging 12.1 MPG there and 12.6 MPG back to Phoenix...AC on the entire way, cruise control set, and never getting lower than 55 MPH on the same hills that I was breaking my Chevy's balls to even stay above 30.

A *FAR* superior engine! I can't wait until I get the E w/A installed!!!!

Towing is a pleasure when you have the right equipment Just towed our 34' travel trailer (approx 10k# loaded) 2800 miles to PA and back to Atlanta. 1/4 of the trip was 2 lane roads thru the Blueridge Mountains on some steep grades. The diesel X is a beast!! I'll say it again too, it is a shame they are doing away with it in 06

Glad to hear your trip exceeded expectations!!

Bill:

Thanks for the tip. I have a hi-flow 4" muffler that I was going to install, but was considering leaving the 3.5" exhaust intact. Bad idea?

Secondly, I purchase the Edge Juice w/ Attitude, and it has the little LCD gauge deal. When you talk about adding guages, do you mean additional ones ON TOP OF the Attitude readout dealie?

Thanks,
Kevin

If you just want to keep the stock 3.5" exhaust piping intact but want to replace the choking stock muffler I highly recommend the Walker Big Truck Muffler which is a straight thru design, sounds great and is less than $60 shipped

Running 3.5" exhaust piping into a 4" muffler and out with 3.5" piping would be Jerry Rigging your Excursion

Gauges wise long as whatever you're using(Attitude Monitor,X-Monitor,regular gauges) you have to have the Exhaust Gas Temp & Boost pressure measurements especially if you've bumped the programming up,drive hard and/or tow.

I'm an amateur at this diesel mod stuff, Bill, so don't feel bad about telling me that I'm a 'tard for doing something that's not a good idea.

I already have the 4" Magnaflow muffler. So here are my options as I see it:

a) buy a Walker muffler and ditch the Magnaflow
b) use the Magnaflow and adapt it to work

If I go with option B, and I wanted to keep the 3.5" piping...would you recommend a 4" tailpipe from the muff backward? I figured out the CFMs mathematically, and at 3k RPM, it's moving the same amount of air as my 5.2L Mopar V8 at 4000+ RPM. We've done substantial testing with this 5.2L motor, and have found that 3" is the optimum flow allowance without losing but a little bit of torque due to reduced backpressure. Now...maybe a diesel doesn't need backpressure...I don't know, but when I figured out the square inches of pipe that would be optimal for the diesel based on cubic inches, I came up with 3.61" ID. Now, my 3.5" OD pipe has somewhere around 3.35" ID, so I didn't see a large increase to be had by swapping to 4"...and also the fact that the downpipe is STILL going to be the most restrictive part of the system and can't be increased to 4", in my mind I've decided that there is no reason to go to 4".

With that said...any reason why I can't run the 4" Magnaflow muffler?

Any holes in my logic above that you can see?

Thanks,
Kevin

Since you have the 4" Magnaflow go ahead and use that but do put a 4" tailpipe on it.

For the downpipe I wouldn't go any bigger than 3.5" as with the 4" you'll lose alot of low end torque and the MPG's will suffer around town but when you're towing the EGT's will be somewhat lower

Talk to my friend Dennis at ITP as he's one of the many Diesel gurus I look up to his shop is on West Thunderbird there in Phoenix,he'll keep you steered in the right direction
