Hello everyone. I haven't posted in a long time but have kept up with the reading. I have a question. I own a 2003 Excursion 4x4 XLT with the V10 and 3.73 gears. I want to tow my 65 Catalina to Norwalk for the Pontiac Nationals. It's a long tow though without trailer brakes. Is the X set up for this? Is it as simple as connecting a trailer with the brakes? Or do I need a separate brake controller?
Thanks, Bob |

Not only do you "need" a separate trailer brake controller, you'll probably find that towing that much weight without brakes is illegal. Simply plugging the trailer's electrical plug into the Bargman receptacle at the the rear of your X does nothing in regards to activating and controlling the brakes on the trailer.
Let me suggest the Tekonhsa (sp?) Prodigy unit. It's a little pricey, but its features are well worth it. You'll also need the pigtail that plugs into your wiring harness under the dash (to the right of the driver's footwell), and gets hard-wired to the brake controller.
One last thing ... welcome to the forum!

Does Ford still throw those connectors in when you purchase the truck? My last Bronco & F150 both had one laying under the seat. Was able to connect it to the brake unit & plug it into the truck. Easy as could be. My 01 EX didn't have one but I figured the previous owner took it out???

I agree with Landyot on the Prodigy brake controller. This what I use for towing my travel trailer. Pricey but worth it. You can pick them up online for around $100 plus shipping. Some places go as much as $169 (usually retail stores like camper dealers and stuff) so be careful where you buy it! My 04 X came with a pigtail pigtail in the glovebox. The receptical is under the dash almost right behind the recessed 'cubby hole'. I purchased the Tekonsha pigtail for the Ford Super Dutys and had the thing hooked up in 10 min. I perminately mounted it in the "Cell Phone Holder" or whatever the rectangle hole is.
Cheers!
