Anyone do a Front End Alignment on a 4x4 Excursion?

I have not done it myself but my alignment shop here in Plano does it whenever we get new tires installed.

Are you having a problem with the front end on your X?

Bill,

No problems with my Excursion. I check tires pressures frequently and rotate wheels/Tires every 5K.

My Daughter-in-law has a 2003 Excursion and doesn't do any of the above even tho I suggested she do it. Her front tires are screwed up from under inflation and no rotation she has 41K I have 31K miles. My tires look like new with very little wear and her front tires are about done.

She said to me the ride is bumpy and the truck pulls to the left. One front tire has a variation in tread of about 3/8 of an inch and one was down to about 25 psi.

One thing I've noticed with the Excursion/Superduties is the tires almost need rotations done on a steady schedule without missing a note, same thing with tire inflation psi.

I took mine in cause it was pulling to the left. They said the toe was out a little and so was the camber. They were able to adjust the toe, but apparently the camber is fixed at the factory. The only way to adjust it is to have some aftermarket parts (top ball joint maybe) installed which can be rotated to adjust the camber. I still haven't done it, but I don't see any abnormal wear on my tires either? I just make sure the wind is alwasy coming from my left

My alignment shop has that caster or camber kit that makes it adjustable that you mention(like $75)that I may invest in for the next alignment, our Excursion pulls ever so slightly to the right which is my preference without any noticable tire wear.

Richard, from the sounds of it your tires are what's causing her X to pull and ride so bad. Start with new skins and have them check alignment. If the camber is off, more than likely they'll tell you that there's nothing they can do unless you install the modification. Apparently Ford doesn't think that it will ever change once it leaves the factory

I have done some investigation since my initial post. For the record I not only check and correct my tire pressures a couple of times a month and rotate at 5K intervals I also measure tread depth across the tire and maintain records. I do sometimes make pressure adjustments to even out the wear across the tire surface but maintain equal pressures on each side of an axle.

There is an insert where the upper spindle mount is located. According to the Ford Service Manual you check alignment and say for example you need +2 degrees more camber. You pull the cylindrical insert and look at it's calibration - example it reads +1 degree - then you get an insert calibrated to + 3 degrees, etc.

The adjustable connection sounds good if it will stay put!

I'm bringing mine in this week for some front end work, I'll let you know what we find. I just took a 600 mile trip with new tires and it was pulling to the left something fierce. My shop tells me that the camber rarely will affect the pull, but adjusting the caster will straighten it out if the toe adjustment didn't do it. I just had the toe alignment done 2000 miles ago, and it still pulled left. 600 mile trip made me decide to get it taken care of since we're doing it again in 3 weeks.

I have just over 3000 miles on my 05 Excursion. I put a bubble gauge on the front wheels, and
I'm 2 degree different side to side. Time to get it on an alignment rack... Question is, do
I take it back to the stealer or take it to a shop that knows what they are doing....
