Ok, you guys have been awesome in helping me and I have another question.

My 2000 Excursion Limited doesn't have any remote key fobs (at least I wasn't given any). It does have the key pad on the door, but I want a remote.

So, couple of questions:

1. Can I just buy the remote fobs from anywhere (ie. EBay)?

2. If so, can I program them myself or do I have to take it to a dealer? If I can program myself does anyone have the instructions?

3. Would it be cheaper/easier to just buy an aftermarket remote start kit instead? I would like the remote start feature, but need to consider price right now. If so, any recommended brands/models?

Thanks for the help.

I too have a 2000 Ex, but was lucky enough to get both remotes
I cannot answer about how to program or get new ones, sorry. I do know they can be fouund for as little as$35 on Ebay

I personally would recomend getting a remote start.
I am in MN and all of the last 9 vehicles I have had has had them.
Only reason I have not done this truck is it is not a daily driver and only used for towing the boat.
But you will get much better range and functionality out of an aftermarket setup.
As for price, consider if you get a remote start for uner $250 installed, around $400 for complete alarm system, you will spend at least $80 just to get the stock key fobs. Then if you have to have the dealer program them, well I would guestimate another $50. So basically you are already at 50% of what the remote start would be

Do not forget that if you do the remote start at another time, you will be carrying around TWO remotes unless you opt for a full alarm system to control the doors.

Ebay is probably the most affordable place to purchase them in my opinion.

Sure you can program up the remotes yourself

1. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN eight times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN. If the GEM has successfully entered the program mode, it will lock and unlock all the doors.
2. Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.
3. If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait for several seconds and press the button again.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after Step 1, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the GEM will lock and unlock all the doors one last time.

Post up or drop me a line anytime
