Hi guys,
It seems lately that or Exco is hard to start- meaning, we have to crank it over a tad longer for her to fire up. Is this due to a faulty glow plug relay? I remember when we first picked her up from the dealership, she fired right up after the first "crank." We've done the standard "wait to start engine light" like a ritual. When I drive the other cars, I sometimes forget I'm not in the Exco, and wait there with the key in the ON position -thinking it needs time for the plugs to heat up. I remember seeing a post regarding something like this, but it can't seem to find it. I know most wear and tear is caused at startup, so I don't want to be jackin' up the engine like that. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Give us an update on what you found when you did the water drain thing and did you replace the fuel filter yet?

Another posibility is the fuel pump.

Dave.

Haven't done the water drainage yet, but I plan on it tomorrow or at the same time I'm changin' the waterpump . I should change the waterpump on Mon or Tues. Hopefully the part will come in. I believe the fuel filter was changed within 20k, but I may just go ahead and change that while I'm up in there. When I get more cash, I'll be changing out the door lock actuators. I don't want to be bendin' over and takin' it from the dealer.

Jeremy, I didn't see what year your PSD is, but my 2001 was hard to start as you descibe. I installed the SuperChips Micro Tuner program and the hard start disappeared insantly.

I needed some warranty work done (pwr door locks) and so I removed the SCMT program back to stock. Hard start returned. I mentioned it to the dealer who did a computer update, and joila! Hard start gone.

Reinstalled the SCMT program with no problems.

Go see you dealer. There is a Tech Service Bulletin out on the issue, by the way.

Scott,
I talked to the tech and he said it only applied to gasoline Excursions and not PSD's. Do you the actual TSB number about the hard start prob? If I can print it out and show it to him, it would help me out bigtime . Thanks for any info regarding this matter.

Jeremy, I emailed the info...did you go to your dealer? The hard start was cured by a computer update for the diesels...don't know about the gas engines. Insist that they do an update!

Hey guys- I'm not denying a problem BUT, I find that you have to let all the warning lights go off before cranking, even when warm. If i jump in the warm X
and immediately start cranking before my butt bottoms in the seat, it takes a lot longer to fire.
I bet the computer needs to clear and reset for a few seconds (or is it lock and load??). Luckily in Florida I don't have any "cold start" problem.
Actually one time in New York at about 40 degrees, after the cold start the PSD ran REALLY ROUGH, like only 1/2 the cylinders were kicking. I shut down and it restarted OK. When dealer checked codes, allegedly no error.
Ciao, Godfather
