Help- I have the 2001 Excursion Limited with the 6-CD/ Radio unit. I went out and bought some removal tools to take out the CD player so I could try and hook up the speed signal to the radio so I could use the speed sensitive volume control.

Well When I insert the tools- one on each side of the radio trrough the twin holes on each side:

The right side is stuck while the left side releases. I have spent too much time messing around and fear if I continue I will bend or break the radio unit.

Is there a secret way to remove these CD/radios in the Excursion. It almost seems that there is a latch or bolt holding in the right side.

Any comments or stories of success removing yours.

When I insert the removal tools I put em in until you feel and hear a click which means they locked into place then apply outward pressure on the tool set while pulling the audio unit away from the instrument panel.

It may take a little bit of wiggling as dried soda/coffee liquids may have gummed up the contact areas around the stereo head unit, the bottom part of the head unit is on a dash mount slide bar track so it'll slide straight out and the same when re-installing it.

If you look just to the right of the plug in this PHOTO you'll see the track I'm referring to.

Bill.

Hope it comes out for you.
But now you have my curiousity on what you are talking about with the speed sensitive volume control?
Is this possible with a 2000?

I would love to have that option
any info from anyone would be greatly accepted

Do you have the CD6 or the cassette/single CD model in your 2000?

I haven't seen a modification as of yet to produce the speed sensitive volume feature on the cassette/single CD units.

Some CD6 units in the SuperDuties was not wired up for the speed sensitive feature but I do have a DIY to fix that.

Bill,

Where's the DIY fix you have? I need to check mine. I'm sure it's not working.

CHP, I know what you mean about the click. The problem is the right side tool slips out. I have worked on it so much that my hands get sore from trying.

That is why I asked if there was another permissive related to taking out the unit. From what you are saying, I am thinking the CD player was installed with a problem with the track. It seems jammed on the right side.

Thanks for posting the DYI install of the speed sensor input. I got the information from another site I like to visit.

Next I will try getting someone else that does this for a living to try and remove it.

Sounds like the right side pressure release tabs are bent, jammed or something.

I dunno if you can reach the rear of the stereo from under the left side of the dash by the accelerator pedal area but if you can have a helper work the tool set while you try and push the stereo out from the rear,it has worked for me in the past.

It may take a side to side motion to get the release tabs past the cage.
