Does anyone know how the trip computer computes the miles to empty? Does it look at current average miles per gallon then computes based on remaining fuel? Does it only look at the average mpg from when you last started the vehicle? Could it just be a S.W.A.G?

Thats one I never looked into but I'll assume it partially determines miles to empty based on fuel level in the tank.
I'd like to hear more on this subject myself.

I figure that has to have something to do with it. My thought is that if you are just in and around town your fuel comsumption is more then, your miles to empty is one value. If you then get out on the highway, mpg's go up, your miles to empty should increase. I guess it depends on when the mpg value is taken. What it looks like to me, is that the mpg value is taken from when you start the car and only recalculated the next time you start the car. |

I know when in town at a full tank it'll be in the 500-600 range but once on the freeway and reset the overhead it'll be in the upper 600's to 700's so yes RPMs and speed will be in there too.
The only way I can calculate mileage due to were not running with stock programming is using the odometer.

All,
I just drove ours about eighteen hundred miles and was fascinated to see the computer number going UP on the distance to empty...
We started out filled to the top of the filler neck and as we pulled out of the station the computer said 650 distance to empty, and then slowly crept up to 665. We next fueled up at about an 1/8th of a tank and had gone 710 with distance to empty still showing fifty or so miles.
It appears to be a bit inaccurate, so other than using it as a guide I'm a lot more comfortable using a manual analysis of mpg...

Among those of us who frequent these X-Files with regularity, it has become common knowledge that the overhead "lie-o-meter" is just that. My '01 Limited was consistently 4-tenths optimistic, and my '05 EB is proving to be about the same. I've had the '05 since November, but only filled it for the third time last Friday ... at $1.949/gal. I always calculate by hand ... OK, actually by electronic calculator. |
