I am in the process of selecting some new shocks for my 2005 X since we all know the stock ones are terrible. Are the Rancho's which are almost $35 more per shock better than the Pro Comp MX-6's( the adjustable one)
These will be installed on a 2005 Excursion 2Wd v10 |

Hi there, John. I've run both, and most DEFINATELY prefer the MX6 shocks to the RS9k shocks. Interesting story I was told by someone in the industry: the MX6 shock was designed by the Rancho (Monroe) team for the update to the RS9k. Rancho decided that with the tooling and the additional product cost that they had to take on, they would be bastardizing their already profitable RS9k shocks. So, they licensed the design to ProComp, as well as offered their shop (Monroe) to build them for ProComp. So, it was a win-win for Rancho. They either sell their very profitable 9k shock, or the customer buys the competitor's product, also giving them a back-end kick. A perfect setup for Monroe.
Anyway, technically speaking, the RS9k adjusts the rebound only, whereas the MX6 knob adjusts both the compression and rebound. Think about a washboard road, and you'll quickly see why the 9k shock is a liablity in that instance, and not a clear winner in any other category. The MX is also gas-charged. Again, I've run both. Hands down, the MX is the clear winner. I'm actually going to pull out the Bilsteins that I have in the front of the Ex and replace them with the 2wd part number for the Expedition which is like 10"/15" if memory serves. They don't show a shock application for the earlier year Excursions of the 2wd varietal.
Hope that helps.

Hi Kevin,
lets see better shock, less $, sounds like a case that would be hard to lose on that one.
