I took my new (used) 2001 Excursion in to have shocks and sway bar installed, and since I had felt a steering wheel shimmy I had them rotate and balance, too. This did not resolve the shimmy. It's pretty minor, but definitely noticeable at 70mph. The shop said my tie rods are worn, and quoted nearly $500 in parts and labor to replace them.
Any advice on this would be appreciated. My questions:
- Is it likely the shimmy is coming from worn tie rods?
- How can I tell if my tie rods are actually worn? I generally trust the shop I go to, but they do have a few inexperienced mechanics.
- Does that price seem way too high? The parts alone were about $300. That was inners and outers on both sides.
On a side note, the Excursion rides much better with the RS9000s and Helwig sway bar. I love it!
Thanks,
Curtis

I suggest you do a search in this Forum for "noise,Vibration,Shimmy". Search the "words" individually. Read what others have to say.
I would hold off replacing parts until you fully understand what is going on. This will allow you to make an informed decision.
