Have any of you guys changed your transfer Case fluid? Is it easy.
If you have, could you post on how to do it and what type of fluid to use.
I have an 02 Ex with the V-10..
I don't use the 4x4 very often and I would think that condensation would be building up in it after this long w/o a fluid change.
thanks.... |

Stuff you'll need:
* 2 quarts of your favorite ATF
* drain pan for the old fluid
* Some towels for cleaning up
* 10 mm allen socket
* a smallish funnel
Find the transfer case. The drain and fill plugs are towards the rear. The
drain plug is the lower plug. The fill plug is the upper plug.
Put the drain pan under the transfer case about where you think the fluid is
going to go when it arcs through the air. The 15-quart pan that I use for
the oil works well here, and I rarely loose any ATF.
Use the 10 mm allen socket to loosen and remove the lower, or drain, plug.
You can do the last few turns by hand.(Just a note the drain and fill plugs may be abit tight)
Move the drain pan to where the ATF actually arcs. Then use one of the
towels to wipe off your hands.
In a few minutes, the flow is about finished, though it will trickle out the
last spoonfull over the next three hours. When you've had enough, replace
the drain plug.
Remove the upper, or fill, plug.
Add two quarts of ATF using the funnel. There exist small pumps at NAPA that
make this part of the job really easy.
Replace the fill plug, and you're done. I take the used ATF back to
AutoZone.

ChpMustang,
Thanks so much..Sounds really easy..I did crawl underneath after I posted and found both the fill and removal 10mm bolts...
In your opinion, should I have the Transfer Case warmed up or does it really matter. I know the Tranny fluid expands when warm...Wasn't sure if when I did this cold if it would screw anything up. I also saw in my manual that it takes 2 quarts of Tranny Fluid...
Thanks for your knowledge...
Have you ever done this before??? How often should I do this??

I choose to change it during the summer months as it's at it's thinnest.
I've changed it once on our 99 F250 and have yet to do it to our Excursion.
Many owners change it every 10k-15k miles with regular Chevron type trans fluid due to the low cost.

CHP,
Thanks for oyur help on this one.
I changed the Transfer Case ATF today and it was a breeze..I'm glad you filled me in on the pump to get it back into the Case...2.25 qts of Mercon went in...No mess anywhere...That's unusual for me...
Thanks Again,
Big Rig...
The fluid was sorta of cloudy, yet still red...I'm glad I changed it...
