My 2000 V10 4X2 4.30 LS has had a serious detonation problem for the last 10k miles or so. The longer I drove it, the worse it got. It also seemed to ping more as the day got hotter (95-100 all summer long in San Antonio). During this period, I also noticed that the starter seemed to be slowing down. I'm from the old school and believe that you replace the battery only after you have to jump it a couple of times. Wrong! The minute I replaced the battery the truck ran like new. I tried lugging it up a hill, 4th gear with the converter locked, 40 MPH, in 105 degree weather. No ping!
The battery was original with about 55k miles on it.
Strange, but true.
