Okay gang, I finally did it. I was at the off road show at the Pomona [Calif] Fairplex Saturday and I was looking for a 4 bbl manifold for my VW Thing when I happened upon the Banks Power booth. They had a show special that saved me a couple hundred dollars. I now have the Six-Gun controller and the TransCommand module. It has taken us the better part of two days to install all the components. I also opted for the two pod holder on the "A" pillar. I drove down to Banks this afternoon and they painted the pod to match my tan interior. I also bought a trans temp gauge which we still have to finish hooking up. We opted to install the EGT probe in the exhaust manifold rather than the downpipe. It is supposed to give me a more accurate reading. Most of the 'extra' time was spent removing the battery, the airbox, the air inlet pipe and then finally the exhaust manifold. I didn't want to do the drilling with the manifold on the engine as I didn't want to damage the turbo. We also spent some time hiding all the wires so if one were to look under the hood, there would be nothing to show what we've done. It's a very clean installation. It also runs a lot quicker.

Had to remove the exhaust manifold to drill for the probe? That's a new one to me Shoulda been in town as we(whatabudro) and I could have knocked it all out in 2-3 hours easy

And yes,Pre turbo is the most accurate way for Pyrometer hookup, just about a 200 degree difference compared to post turbo.

Careful with that leadfoot

The main reason it took us so long to complete this install is that neither of us has done much work on a diesel. Prior to this, the only thing we've done was to install a K&N air filter and the Magnaflo exhaust. We wanted to take our time and do it right the first time. If we had done this once or twice before, it would have taken a lot less time. Lots of little petty things to do. But, I have to admit, IT WORKED RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

As I say when working on these trucks measure 2-3 times then cut/drill

Let us know what kind of EGT's you're getting at different speeds, etc.

I must admit, I REALLY like the Six-Gun from Banks. It sure makes getting on the freeway a lot easier. It gets up to speed very quickly. I've been running on step 3 [out of 6] for most of the time. It's supposed to get more power and better mileage at that setting. I also got a Banks trans temp gauge and noticed that it runs below the lowest setting [140 degrees] most of the time. I thought the gauge was not working and called Banks. They told me that under a "no load" condition [meaning no trailer in tow] the temp will be between 140 and 170. Also because we installed the sensor in one of the threaded ports on the trans rather than drilling into the pan. The "TransCommand" works well too. It lets the trans shift normally when light footed and shifts firm when applying more power.

Okay, here's a little more info on the Six-Gun. Just returned from a 500 mile trip with a 9000 lb. trailer in tow. I had the Six-Gun set on level 4 for most of the trip. I was able to easily outpull the big rigs on all the hills. Los Angeles to Bakersfield and then on to Taft and then several miles on dirt roads. The EX handled it all very well. A couple of times climbing the Grape Vine I saw the EGT's exceed the limit and the 'red light' came on. I immediately backed off the throttle and the temp dropped. Had I not backed off, the Six-Gun would have backed off the on the tuning. Later while driving on a flat and level road without the trailer, the check engine light came on and stayed until today when I took the EX to my local Ford Dealer. Fuel pressure problem that was onlly briefly there. Ford charged me $135 for the diagnosis. I later found out that Pep Boys and Auto Zone would have done the diagnosis for FREE. I called Banks and was told this is one of the little bugs that pop up when using these devises they usually clear themselves after a few short trips without any problems. The dealer reset my light. Guess where I'll take it next time? Still, the Six-Gun makes the EX a lot of fun to drive.

Did you take the six gun out when you went to the dealer?
Do they complain about your exhaust setup?

When the dealer found out about the Banks set-up they gave me the usual bit of warranty denial because of changing the chip. I told them two things, First, the Banks set-up does NOT change the chip or reprogram the exisitng one. The service manager wasn't aware of this. Second, Banks has gone to court twice [or more] regarding this and WON. The Banks Six-Gun does not exceed the manufacturers [Ford] limits. Also, when you set up the Six-Gun with the different limits and the engine exceeds one, the SG will automatically detune itself back to stock specs until the problem is resolved. A red light comes on to warn the driver to back off of the throttle and that usually takes care of it. My 'check engine' light came on again yesterday while going up the "Grape Vine" [almost 4200 feet up] again. This time without the trailer. After a couple of stops and starts [lunch and checking in at the motel, the sensor reset itself and the light went out. Banks told me this would happen. Wish it did so the first time; I wouldn't have had to give the dealer $134 to tell me what it was.

I've got a Six Gun in my 2000 X and love it. Pulled my 9000lb boat up to the lake yesterday and never saw EGT's higher than 1150 on setting 6 pulling up a 4% grade. I did get an SES light on the way home whil accelerating on level ground. I haven't had a chance to pull the code yet. Did they tell you what code they pulled from yours at the dealer?

Uh.....I think the bill is still in the EX....and I'm in the house. It was a "P" code and had to do with fuel pressure or delivery. The light came on again yesterday, however, it cured itself. Both times were without the trailer in tow. Okay, I just went down and got the bill. The code is P1211 ICP.
ICP stands for Injection Control Pressure.
