Basically the same sheet of general destructions, last month a friend here just installed his rear hellwig on his Excursion and the paperwork looked the same to me
As usualy came with mis matched hardware, had to go to a speciality parts warehouse for the correct bolts.

I forwarded a new Hellwig anti-swaybar to an X-owner in Norway (JCW & Summit wouldn't ship it there). The instructions have gotten a little better ... the drop-links are a totally different design than my bolt-together-halves ... all the necessary hardware was in the box ... nothing missing and nothing extra. I was pleasantly surprised. |

Hi folks,
Maybe I can combine a couple of threads started by Dan Walker as I have similar questions.
First off, I have a 2000 4WD with 114k miles. The shocks are going bad and have no brand name on them, so I may still have the orig shocks at this point. I lan to replace them soon, and based on the responses I receive to my posting on another thread, I suspect I may be getting Rancho RS9000's.
I have also already installed a Hellwig rear anti-sway bar.
Now then, I occasionally tow an 8,500lb, 32' trailer. I haven't done so yet with the recently purchased Ex, but I did do so successfully with my old Nissan Titian on which I installed air bags.
My goals are two-fold. The Beast is the wife's daily kid hauler and her primary concerns are comfort and less twist/roll on driveways and such. Secondly, I need to make sure that when I first tow with this thing, I have already addressed rear end squat, and more importantly, fish tailing. I have a weight distribution hitch for the trailer.
So what are the next steps?
Is it a good idea to add a front sway bar as well? (the wife still complains of the driveway rocking thing).
Should I go with the air bags, or the Type B leaf springs? Again, I have a 4x4.
I realize I am asking sort of the same questions as Dan, but I wanted to add the fact that I already have the rear sway, and still have rocking issues. And that in my case, a WD hitch is being used and it's a 4WD truck.
thank you in advance folks. |

First, WELCOME to the forum!
Your X should already have a front anti-swaybar. You may want to search online for some polyurehane bushings to improve its performance.
You said you use a weight-distributing hitch, and that's a very good thing for 8,500# of trailer. I use a W-D hitch, and only pull ~5,600# ... it helps a lot.
You didn't mention which engine. If you have the 5.4L gas V8, I believe 8,500# exceeds the specified towing capacity. |

I have the V-10.
If I already have a front roll bar (thanks for that info [and the WELCOME] by the way), then what do you think is the primary factor causing the wallowing back and forth? The bad shocks? And what would be your rec. for towing the trailer without fish tailing, air bags or the B spring replacement?
Thanks a lot. |

Most any aftermarket shock absorber is an improvement over the OEM untis, especially if you suspect the originals are still on there. Ranchos are a good choice ... I have 'em on mine. Wait until after you get the shocks replaced before deciding if you need/want anything else to control the wallowing.
In regards to towing, my W-D hitch is sufficient, and I haven't done anything to "beef up" the capacity of the rear leaf springs. As I said, I'm running Rancho shocks. I also have the Hellwig rear anti-swaybar, and my own radius-rods. I haven't found a need to compensate for trailer tongue weight. However, if I did need to do that, I would probably opt for air-bags simply because they're adjustable. Once you swap out leaf springs, you're pretty much stuck with the ride quality they give. |

The tongue weight on my TT is around 950/lbs. I also use WD (it is built into my Hensley Arrow Hitch System) I still had a lot of squat though (stock shocks). I went with Timbren Load Boosters from Michigan Truck Spring. Inexpensive ($159 for the pair) and easy to install. Basically they replace the yellow rubber snubbers that are bolted to your frame above the rear axel. Nice thing about them is that they do not change the ride when you are not under load. When you are under load the ride is not stiff but you feel much more stable. I am very happy with these. Mine is also a 4x4 and between the addition of the rear anti-sway and the Timbrens it has made a completely different towing experience.
Ps. If you really want to get away from sway with your TT, get a Hensley Arrow Hitch! Virtually locks the trailer behind your vehicle until the TV decides to turn. No leverage can be gained on the TV by the trailer. Other benefits are increased turning radius, up to 60 degrees (without removing or undoing WD bars!!)Not cheap though!
