Ok, it looks like my dash air bag light has burned out. It no longer comes on and I get an annoying chime (think it's a code 5 or 55??) and does this about every 15min while driving.
Is it possible to replace just that bulb or do I have to replace the entire gauge cluster? Anyone done this yet to their Ex? |

It does take a little bit of work but yes the cluster does remove to replace bulbs that are out.

Is the airbag a simple bulb/socket for easy replacement or is it a bulb that is soldered in? |

Four things that could cause the airbag indicator lamp not to function;
Indicator bulb.
Circuitry.
Instrument cluster.
Air bag diagnostic monitor.
To safely remove the instrument cluster there's a procedure called "Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering"
First you'll have to remove the 10 amp fuse for the restraints control module(RCM) after doing so turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30 seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct RCM fuse has been removed then turn ignition OFF.
To properly deplete backup power supply energy you must disconnect the batteries(Negatives first Positives second) after the batteries have been disconnected for about a minute you're ready to move on.
Remove the stereo.
Loosen/remove the 2 screws just above where the stereo was installed..
Remove the instrument panel cluster finish panel.
Disconnect the electrical connectors.
Lower the steering wheel tilt adjustment.
Remove the four instrument cluster screws(at each corner) and pull the instrument cluster away from the instrument panel.
Disconnect the electrical connectors.
If equipped, disconnect the transmission range indicator.
Push in the two clips and pull out the transmission range indicator. Position the indicator aside and remove the instrument cluster.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Turn the warning indicator bulb 1/4-turn counterclockwise and remove the bad warning indicator bulb/s.
My information is from the 2002 Excursion Workshop Manual.
