About 10 days ago, the Ex was really hard starting one morning. We drove down to NH and back and it was running very rough. When it didn't get better after a couple of days I took it in to my mechanic. Turns out I had two bad plug coils. Since we're almost 90K miles, I had him replace the plugs while he was at it. I expect that over time the rest of the coils will start to fail. Since I can't really afford $700 to replace them all right now, I'm wondering if there is some way to identify the bad ones without the diag computer? Anyone have any tips on troubleshoot a bad coil? Thanks....

I was about to post the same question. I detailed the engine compartment today and she misses at idle and or below about 1800rpm... Doesanyone know how to troubleshoot these plugcoils with an ohm or voltage reading. Any help would be welcome.

Ken, any luck finding the time to locate a resistance test for these coils? On the way to the school this morning it became apparent that another one has gone bad. I really wish I could afford to buy the other eight and replace them all.... but alas....

i had the number 3 coil go bad on me. i thought it was plugs at first so i changed them but still the same. when i pulled all the plugs out i told my wife that for some reason the #3 plug looked slightly ( and i mean slightly!! ) darker. which stands to reason because it was like it is running rich on that cylider because the plug wont fire every time. anyway, i thought i had better take it in to do the wdt test and the mechanic came back and said that the #3 coil was bad. so in hind sight i should have changed it myself. but i also had put new plugs in which makes it easier to read them. in the future i will just do it trial and error because it only takes less than a minute to change the coil ( unless its one of the stupid back ones!) clarence |

The easiest way to troubleshoot a bad coli is to purchase one of those small handheld OBD2 diagnostic computers from your local autoparts retailer (Advance Auto, AutoZone, etc.). They will run you between $30 - $50 and will be able to indicate to you which colis are bad. When you plug it in to your vehicles port under the drivers side dash it will scan for problems and will return with a misfire code. It will also tell you which cylinder it is and bingo there is your bad coil. Even when you take it to a stealership they are not actually scanning your vehicle for a bad coil code (which can only be found using the big expensive one shown above), they are looking for the misfire code, which is faster and easier to pull from the vehicles computer.
Hope this helps, it has for me. |

I posted some info on this awhile ago. I bought 10 new coils for $18 each on E-Bay. Still running strong!
Do a search on E-Bay. I can get you more info later.

the crappy thing is that it wont always bring up a code though. mine didnt. it sputtered along like nothing was wrong. no check engine light or nothing. i talked to the tech at ford and he said that the misfire would have to be pretty bad in order to bring up a code. |
