Hi all, long time lurker...
Is it just me or is there not alot of technical info on this board? I spend a bunch of time on a porsche board, and if you search those archives you could rebuild three different kinds of motors while you weld flares.

Any way I pulled a couple of the coil plugs, no moisture... Still missing at idle and lower rpms. Can you buy these things at Pepboys or are they a dealer item? I've had so little problems with this truck I don't even have a Haynes book. Please lend some insight on DIY with one of these v10's.

Hey how hard could it be...; soon after people ask if you are ever goin to mow under that thing.

Thanks, Rob

Howdy Rob,I'm in no way a V10 engine guru but here's a few things I'd be suspicious of the missing symptoms(this is what I go after on the 5.0L engines)

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
Fuel Delivery System
PCV System
BARO and/or MAP sensor
O2 sensor/s
EGT sensor

My suggestion is to run a code scan for any embedded DTC's then I'll have something to go on

I guess our trucks (especially the V10s) don't have too many problems that would warrant a forum full of super technical stuff.

The absense of moisture doesn't mean that the COP is still good. I had one that was cracked (#9) and there was no way I could tell without the scan tool Ford dealers have.

That's another thing, too. Most of the truck's engine is electronically controlled and most do not have access to the Ford scan tool. My Superchips Micro-tuner will scan for codes but that's about it. There isn't a whole lot we can do to it other than swap out off-the-shelf aftermarket items and maybe weld in a muffler.

And one more thing...whew!..these truck engines are so mildly tuned that rebuilds and such usually don't need to happen for 250K plus. Not something that can be said of say...a Porsche 911SC.

As for the COPs, yes; they can be had in the aftermarket. Ford ones are the best and can even be found on ebay. I'm searching for the homemade test for us to test them. I'm out of town for the holidays so I have to do some internet searching in some obscure sites.

Spoiled or stupid?

Rob, I just went thru the same thing. Mine was missing badly. With a V10, you would hardly feel missing a single cylinder.... so I knew I was missing two or more. My mechanic put the scan tool to it and found it missing on #2 and #9. Both COP units needed to be replaced. I looked them over and there was no visible moisture and no visible cracks or other damage. They just wore out. The list price for the COPs is about $90, but you can get them from some of the on-line Ford parts sites for about $66 plus shipping. If you don't have a Check Engine light, then it's not likely to be an O2 or other sensor.

Thanks for the replies...
Funny, the thing just kind of worked itself out. I detailed the engine compartment, you know a little Gunk engine degreaser and a very low pressure hose. I used to be pro with drying off the distributer after the car wash with the ol'89 Bronco I used to have. Anyway, as decribed earlyier, it was at least a couple pistons not firing, however I didn't think it would take 3 to 4 days to dry out. I was sure she was goin to stay messed up.

So take it for what it's worth, strange miss firing problem after getting the engine compartment wet.
Gone in three days.

Hey, one other thing... The heavy cable from the batt. to the alt., the insulation at the alt is all dry rotted out (last 1.5 inches), wire is fine and uncarroded. Anyone change one of these out?

Thanks again, Merry Christmas

Ok I'll bite...
I'm spoiled because on the pelican parts board almost any technical issue can be resolved and it makes me spoiled when trying to figure out problems with my 30 year old 911.
Secondly it is a question "am I stupid or do the archives on this board contain very little information on say DIY of the ignition system. Therefore spoiled or stupid.

Hopefully that will clear it up for you folks spoiling for a good flaming. Sorry you didn't understand the intent, just trying to figure out whats wrong with the Ford.

I just had this issue of the COP's going bad last week. It took 4 of them to have the check light come on. I am spoiled... or wait, lazy. I took it in and had them all changed out. I'm not into laying over the engine anymore to fix things.
