My wife and I bought our first Excursion last month it is a 20012wd PSD with 107,000 miles. What a great truck. We're getting ready for a first road trip wth it to Utah from Arizona can't wait. So far around town we're getting 16 MPG.
My Question
I went to install the trailer brake pigtail to the connector under the dash but I can't get my fat hands up under the dash do I need to remove part of the dash to install it to the connector or do I just need to get a smaller set of hands.
Thanks for the help
Robbie

Welcome to FordExcursions! Great to have you on board
I have not yet worked with trailer brake controller installs but I'm sure some of our members will chime in soon to lend a hand
Take care & Happy New Year!

It has been a while since I put my Prodigy in but if I remember correctly it was a tight hand fit! All I remember doing was removing the panel under the steering wheel and the connector was to the upper right. I am not sure if there is any difference under there between an 01 and an 04 though.

I have the trailer instruction manual from my 01 in front of me. If memory serves me right ,I had my son find it for me. Between old age and bifocals i can't see *%^$#@ any more!! The plug is on the upper rightof the access opening. It is a female plug. Ford sends the male pidtail with the truck new. I just went out out to my shop to look but I think I used the extra one on my used superduty. You might want to look for a pigtail at the auto parts store. I believe there are aftermarket plugs available. With a e-mail address I could scan and send you the pages from my manual. I can figure how to use this system or would attatch it now. This system needs to be adjusted for gearheads, not geeks. |

gawent is correct. You'll need to remove the lower dash panel (4 half-turn screws: use a coin) and then you should be able to access it fairly easy. It certainly is a screwy location.

Know exactly what you mean having just installed my brake controller over the holidays. At least in the '04, Ford is a big tease. Taking off the accessory panel with the four screws only allows you to see the connector, without actually being able to get to it. Needed to take off another panel which was more work. Probably much easier to get someone with a small hand to just reach up in there and plug in the pig tail.

I've just done this. Take the panel below the steering wheel and the plug will be in the lower right as you are looking toward the front of the vehicle. It is a very tight fit so you may have to solicit the aid of someone with small hands. I managed to do it myself but it wasn't easy.
05 limited that I expect to run the wheels off because nothing to match is on the horizon. |
