So I have an Ex coming in the next couple of weeks (04) I would like to repalce the standard 6-disc radio with an in-dash nav system- also has the DVD overhead
There seems to be some interface between or among the DVD, 6disc radio and the controls
on the steering wheel - I can't figure what
SPECIFIC QUESTION: #1 - if I rip out the 6 disc, cut the wires to the DVD etc, will the DVD
still workas a stand-alone system???????????
i.e. - the back seaters can have their DVD, use the headphones, etc ???????????
NOTE - I have a Garmin Streetpilot - not what I want - looking at a 2-Din, in dash unit?
Thanks |

Ok, here's what your looking at.
First off the DVD, I assume that you have to tune it to a radio station. If thats the case, then going to an aftermarket headunit is a snap.
Second, streeing controls will require an interface to work with an aftermarket deck, depending on make and model. Also easy.
Finaly, your Radio size is 1.5 DIN. Some brands make a deck to fit that size. JVC, Kenwood, and Alpine. Alpine is releasing one this year. Most people will run a standard DIN unit with a install kit that will give you a pocket under the deck. Pioneer and Alpine both make killer navi systems for there decks.
I myself have the Alpine 901 flipout deck and run my video back into my factory DVD through the rca's. This will allow you to still have rear controls and headphones

I have an 04' X as well with the factory DVD and have changed out the 6 disc headunit with the Eclipse AVN5495 Nav unit. It's an awesome unit with Nav, DVD & a hard drive that you can store 3,000 songs. I like the double din units better than the flip out screens, they look less aftermarket. Everybody that has seen my setup thinks it looks like a factory Nav, which is what I was trying to achieve.
You can keep the factory DVD but the audio will be through the headphones only & the installer will have to tap into a power lead for the video screen. Right now I'm using the PAC Audio SWI-X steering wheel interface to work the steering wheel audio controls, it works pretty good but can be glitchy at times. Pac just came out with the SWI-ECL which plugs into the Eclipse units rather than using IR signal & eliminates the glitches with the SWI-X, mines on order.

Thanks to BJ and 200P
Lets see if I have part 1 correct -
If I take out the factory 6 disc, the factory DVD in back will still work as a 'stand-alone'
unit and will only play audio through the headphones
I will also have to find power from another source - does this mean that I can
unplug the existing wire from 6 disc IN THE DASH of will I have to tear up the headlining?????
Still a little confused - BJ says 1.5 DI N and 200P decsribes as 2 DIN or double Din ????
200P - could not access your pictures??
Thanks

You won't have to cut anything just unplug it.
As far as deck size, you can have a dbl din with a little triming to the opening at the top and bottom. (very) little. Then fab some trim to hide the slight gap on the sides. Also very little. if the DVD unit comes with an aux video & audio out, then you could back feed the sound into your deck.

Hey 200proof, I cannot access that link....I'm really interested in seeing that install. I just installed my Sirius starmate and Ipod and it works great with the factory 6 disc in dash...but in about a year or so, I would like to attempt something like this. |

For pictures of the Eclipse AVN5495 try going to www.webshots.com, then go to community & at the bottom of the page you can "find a member" type in 200Proof and it should bring up my photo album.

You are indeed a wizard
I finally was able to access your photos - what a clean install
If I'm looking correctly, you have some kind of trim around the nav unit -
did you fab it or what?
Also two quick questions-
Are you using the stock Ford antenna or is there some other
that works better? Primarily interested in the nav.
I believe the mapping information on the Eclipse is factory loaded
on the hard drive - how do you upgrade as new info becomes
available?
Thanks for all the info - you really have a great ride

Dag,
Thanks, I love the truck & yes, I am using the stock antenna for the stereo, the nav has its own antenna which I have mounted under the plastic piece where the windshield wipers are. The map is factory loaded and updates will be via memory stick from what I've been told. The trim piece around the hu was fabricated buy the guy that did the install, at first we tried one from a kit but it didn't fit very good so he made his own.
