Yes. I see no reason why they would be different save for the output shaft because one mates up to a transfer case while the other mates up ot the driveshaft.
Ford claims that the trans filter never needs replacing and it cannot be back flushed.
I always change it on its first fluid change, though.

The shop that flushed the trans claimed my filter wouldn't fit. They said it was for the 4wd trans. I think they didn't want to do the job with my parts. They should have said that from the beginning. If this is true and they lied to me, I'll never set foot in there again. |

please clarify what you mean by back flushing. the Filter? or the transmission itself
I have always been an affid fluid changer and mine is due.
Have the power flush done at my local service shop, 5,000 miles l drop the pan and put in a new filter. Then 15,000 miles later repeat with the power flush.
I have already dropped the pan and new filter when I first bought the truck last summer. Have only put 4,000 on it since then. |

Yes, the filter. Some claim that they can clean out the filter by back-flushing the tranny. It doesn't work that way with the 4R100.
Really since the tranny is sealed unlike the engine, I see no reason why the filter would ever really need to be replaced as part of normal maintenance. Now, if a part greneded in there and sent metal down stream...well...then I'd replace it.
I just do it on the first one because...well...just because.

What about the material worn off the bands? When a part self destructs inside the tranny the filter getting plugged is the least of your worries... New trannys should come equipped with a new filter
I'd rather be in the boat with a drink on the rocks then in the drink with the boat on the rocks.... But either way theres gonna be a good story!!! |

I'm only quoting what one of Ford's transmission engineers told me a few years ago. Seems the filter has more than enough capacity for normal wear.

True.

I cleared it all up. I called a local stealership and found out that vehicles with a build date after 10/99 have a different filter than pre-10/99. The trans and filter are the same for both 2wd and 4wd. The parts wharehouse got it wrong. |
