I've got a 2001 Excursion with 80k miles. Ever since the truck was new I've had an intermittent problem with the child safety locks on the back doors. Sometimes, with no apparent pattern or regularity, the child safety feature will engage and the back door cannot be opened from the inside. Since I have no kids, and only carry rear seat passengers about a dozen or so times a year, it was never more than a minor, occasional inconvenience. This past Christmas I was back home visiting family, and stayed with my brother and his family. He currently drives a 2001 Expedition, having previously owned a 1998 Expedition. We got to comparing trucks, and he asked me if I'd experienced the door lock problem on the Excursion. He said he's had the same problem on both of his Expeditions. A couple of other Expedition owners he knows have also had similar problems with their trucks. He pointed out that, for people who regularly carry rear back seat passengers, this could present a significant safety issue. In the event of an accident, the back seat passenger could be trapped, unable to exit the vehicle without outside assistance. Since the front seat passengers may not be aware that the child safety locks had engaged, they would not be thinking that the back seat passengers needed to be released. If the accident involved fire, this could be deadly.
My brother submitted the issue to the NHTSA, but could find nothing to indicate that anyone else had previously submitted a report on this problem. This brings me to the reason for my post. Have any of you experienced a similar problem with your Excursions? Do you know of anyone else who has experienced this problem on another Ford vehicle, SUV, car, truck, etc? Has anyone had any warranty work done on this issue? Any information that anyone has on this would be helpful.
Thanks,
- Jim L

I had a 99 Expedition that had that problem. The child safety latch would engage itself at random intervals. I found that the more the door is used, the faster the damn thing would drop and engage. I eventually solved the problem by making a small piece of plastic and supergluing it to the switch arm. The piece of plastic basically acted as a block to keep the switch from moving.
I sold that truck to my mother, and she has been happy with it.
My 05 Excursion has already shown that it will do the same thing. However, it has only happened once since I got it in October 05. If it does it anymore, I will probably block the switches as well. |

It has never happened to me but I could see it getting switched inadvertantly by th car wash people when cleaning out the door jambs or even drying them for that matter.
Just a thought
I'd rather be in the boat with a drink on the rocks then in the drink with the boat on the rocks.... But either way theres gonna be a good story!!! |
