Hello all!

Newbie here, I purchased a 2002 Excursion 4x4 V10 in December. Its sitting on Firestone Steeltex tires (Load E). At 72- 78 MPH the truck gets REAL noisy, sounds like a roar and it starts to vibrate a bit, at 80 MPH it quiets right back down. Does it on cruise or without, in overdrive and without OD.
Its RPM is about 2200 or so and if I park it and rev it up to 2200 it does not make the sound...

I am thinking tires or drive shaft...any ideas out there???

Thanks

Alan

Could be the tires how do they look? Are they cupped or feathered? My girlfriend has some Firestones on her car and they are loud always I thought her wheel bearings were going but its the tires. You could try rotating them. Can you hear them at other speeds also?

I'd rather be in the boat with a drink on the rocks then in the drink with the boat on the rocks.... But either way theres gonna be a good story!!!

So I added some air to the tires, front up to 50 psi and rear up to 60 psi and the noise moved from 72-78 MPH to about 68-75 MPH and then quiets right down. So would this point to the tires???

How many miles are on the current set ? And since they are Firestone, I'm guessing they are originals. Sounds like you may be on to the problem. Maybe time for a new set.

I just bought the X in Dec. 32k on the truck. I am guessing that because they are the E rated tires that the set was replaced as part of the recall. So less than 32k on the tires, they look pretty good not very worn at all. Just darn loud at 70 -80 MPH.

I am more than willing to put a new set on, but I just don't want to buy a new set and still have the noise.

Noise and Vibration = new transfer case....

Yeah that was it...CV joints bad, leaking between transfer case and transmission.....a complete mess under there...with only 33k on the rig...just bought it in Dec., what a way to start out....but at least it didn't happen mid -trip some where....

I will post more details when I get the complete run down when its done...

Well...here goes....Drive shaft vibration caused damage to the transfer case and also cracked the transmission....so we ended up spending about 5k on the problem. $1900 for new transfer case installed, and $3100 for the new transmission installed. The X runs great now and has no vibration or noise. The best news is the dealer I bought the X from covered all the costs even though it was 15 days out of warranty.
