I was on the freeway the other day accelerating up in the carpool [HOV] lane when all of a sudden the engine skips a beat. Engine died for a split second; recovered and all was good again. This has happened 4 or 5 times now. Today, as I was approaching the freeway on ramp, the engine died. I shifted into neutral and restarted the engine. It ran fine all the way home. I'm guessing that maybe the CPS chip is finally going. It's a 2002, 7.3 PSD. Opinions??

Follow up to this problem. Sam from another site wrote me telling of a place on eBay where I could get it for about $66.00 and some change including delivery. It's an OEM part from Ford. I ordered one last night. I called my local dealer today and they told me that they had just replaced one yesterday and the out the door charges were over $500 including installation. WOW!!! Thank goodness for this list. I'll put the new one in and keep the old one for emergencies. It is still not a warranty or recall item.

While your at it, throw in a 10mm wrench and a LED flashlight as well to help on those times when it is dark and your in the middle of nowhere. Just food for thought

Speaking of LED flashlights, I was shopping for a good one the other day when I found a 3 LED replacement 'bulb' for my old MagLIght. It fits the 2 AA model. Instead of spending $30 or more for a new flashlight, the replacement bulb cost me less than $5 at WalMart and comes with a new reflector too. It's bright, clean and works just like it used to.

I have been reading in different places about CPS failures.....Is this primarily just a problem on the 7.3's or is it occuring on the 6.0's as well??

To the best of my knowledge the 6.0 is exempt from this common failure. I'm buying one today on the way home. |

Now, don't I feel like a fool. When my CPS was giving me problems I called my local Ford dealer and asked if there was a recall on it yet. The answer was no, not yet. They then told me that just the day before they replaced one and the total cost with parts and labor was a little over $500. I said thanks and came home and checked this list and found where I could buy one for $56 plus shipping. I jumped at it and in 4 days I had a new one. OEM in the Ford parts bag. 5 minutes to install and it's been great since. The truck even feels more responsive. I'm happy. Yesterday, I stopped by my dealer to report this and they said Oh, that part is still covered by my warranty. Why didn't they tell me that when I asked. I know I said "recall" but they should have told me it was a warranty item. [5 year, 100,000 mile]

I don't know if you guys caught my post earlyer this year about the recall. You realy need to get a hold of Steve Chan at the NHTSA. He is looking for testamony on CPS failure from a safty stand point and how common this is. He would like a brief account of what happened when it failed. No brakes, no steering, scared to death. This doesn't matter if your truck is in or out of warranty. The more that file the better. I started the recall two months ago. This is awesome to have an engineer on it so soon. The contact is steve.chan@nhtsa.dot.gov |

Okay, here's an update on my update. I finally got hold of Ford Customer Service and asked what could be done regarding the CPS problem I had. After a lot of questions and apologies they told me that "yes it was covered under my warranty, however seeing as my EX has over 36,000 miles and is over 3 years old, I now have a $100 deductable on the warranty. So, I am better off with what I did which was to buy the sensor over e-bay for $56.
Oh, BTW, I sent Steve Chan an e-mail describing what had happened.

Ditto for me. Funny how the deductable matches the cost of the unit from IH. So I went "BLUE". |
