Are the U-bolts holding the axle to the springs tight? You could do away with those snubber-type traction bars and go with radius-rods. Check out the following ...

BTW, have you checked to ensure your rear shock absorbers are still bolted securely? You may also wanna' check your rear calipers and brake pads. If you have a rear anti-swaybar, check those mounting points, too. If you don't have a rear swaybar, ya' might consider getting one.

Are you sure it's the traction bar?

Usually the thumping is caused by the slip yoke needing lubed.

Other thoughts ... Some folks hear a clunk that resulted from minimal grease inside the driveshaft's sliding joint. They added more grease, and the clunk stopped. Also, have you checked the pinion shaft to ensure it hasn't developed some slop.

The big assumption with all my suggestions is that you've already ruled out a bad U-joint.

Oops! Indeed, you did, Ken. Please excuse my obvious ignorance of your post. I had my reply all thought out in my head before the website page opened, and in my anxiety to say what I did, I totally overlooked your reply. But it does show great minds think alike. Hopefully, BUSTN will find the clunk source is something minor like that.
