I just received an emissions recall notice on my 2005 Eddie Bauer X from Ford. My X was built in July 2005.

It is a no-charge program update for the 6.0 computer and it will supposedly do the following:
* Improve cooling perfomance and reliability
* Reduce smoke and odor at idle

It also says "After the update, your vehicle may experience a small reduction in acceleration during the first few minutes of cold engine operation". I have heard bad news about these updates, especially the loss of power after a reprogram. I have ZERO problems with my X now and I am afraid the update may make things worse.

The recall also tells me about Customer Satisfaction Program 05B32 where a new coolant fill level label is appiled to the coolant bottle. What is this about???

From what I know of the 05E16 is that Ford states that the programming is "incomplete" which I don't really understand but it covers some 2004 & 2005 model year Superduties and Excursions.

On the 05B32 it's apparent that all 2005 year SuperDuty/Excursions have coolant bottles on which the fill marks are positioned incorrectly which could result in the bottles being over filled, which in turn cause the coolant to be expelled from the bottle cap under normal use.

They'll just slap on a new level decal now if they require that you get the reflash for the "incomplete" programming that's a toss of the coin as past flashes have been known to go in either the positive or negative direction.

The reprogram is a new flash for your computer that limits performance when temps are low so it is less likely to "tax" or injure your engine....

the coolant recall is terribly complicated though !

they put a new sticker on your coolant overflow bottle that states Full is now at the minimum line

this is an effort to stop what some are experiencing with "boil over" or puking of the coolant out of the degas bottle....

like you I got it and filed it away as a future consideration

If the programming is incomplete then I am not going to do it. I wouldn't think my X would have any recalls so early since it was just built in July 2005. I only have 3,800 miles on it so far and I have not had any problems. My view is that if it isn't broke then why fix it?

I had mine in for an oil change and tire rotate and they informed me of the recall notice. They performed everything that was necessary and the truck runs just fine. Of course it seemed to run just fine before. I usually change my own oil and rotate my own tires but its cold right now and I guess I am just a big baby.

Oh well, i haven't had any adverse things happen and it has been about 2000 miles.
