More fine sand can get past.

Oil can wreak havoc on the Mass Airflow Sensor. If oiled too heavily, the engine will "suck" the oil right off and coat the MAF. This basically insulates that wire making the PCM to make compensations that are not needed. Poor driveablity and reduced MPG usually result.

If used with the FIPK, hot under-hood air is injested in the engine rather than cool dense air.

my lie o meter gained 1.5 mpg when i went to full synthetic but mine seem to be alost dead on 20002wd v10 4.30's 12-14mpg mixed driving.

Monsta , If you use the K&N FIPK pack you do not injest the hot air from the engine bay. The fiter is sealed and shielded from the heat so you do draw the cool dense air .

True...in a way. I don't think those shields are completely effective not like the stock intake anyway. But that's another post, I guess.

You are indeed correct that they have a heat barrier shield.

I feel the only CAI worth buying is a Volant. It is a true Cold Air Intake.

Sounds weird but make sure your battery is in good shape. One other item is to clean the throttle body and sensor. Mileage on mine dropped drastically when the battery was getting weak, second time cleaning the throttle body, made a huge difference. I run 285's and minimum 65 psi in the tires. Usual mileage for me is 10.5 mpg around town and typically better than 17 mpg on the highway if I can keep my foot out of it (below 60mph) even with the trailer towing package and 4.31 rear end (think that is the ratio but it is considerably lower than 3.73). The beast likes to cruise at about 75mph or 125 km/h.

I keep a record book of all my expenses. I record the odometer reading at each fill up, and the gallons put in. I then figure out the miles per gallon and write that down, along with the price. The miles per gallon computer in my 2001 Limited V-10 4x4 with a 3.73 rear always reads high by one to two mpg. My true around town mpg is 9.5 mpg winter and 10 mpg summer. On the road at a cruise control 65, the mpg is 11, with a high of 11.5. Towing my 7,000 lb boat rig yields 9.5 to 10 mpg. One contributing factor to the meager mpg is the 500 pounds or more of tools that I always carry. I carry a loaded bolted down 10 drawer mechanic's tool box where the third seat was, along with 4 packing boxes of assorted stuff - nuts & bolts, 3/4" socket set, winch, jacks, 12v. plug in drill, tow ropes, axes, saws, shovel, wrecking bars, spare 12v battery, etc. This may seem like poor mpg, but my previous tow vehicle, a 3/4 ton 1986 Suburban with a 350 V-8, a TH-400 trans, and a 3.73 rear got 8 mpg - with no 4 wheel drive.

My 2000 4X4 with 4:30 ratio gets about 10 average. 8 around town and 12 on the highway.

Unless something has changed I didn't think a 4X2 had the option for the V-10.

And Mrs. Landyot proclaimed that I was the only fool doing such nonsense. It's not hard to do. Simply jot down the date, mileage, gallons consumed, and price. An Excel speadsheet can calculate everything for you. BTW, my OVERALL miles-per-gallon since 01/21/03 (when I bought my used '01 V10 X) is 11.68 MPG.

WELCOME to the forum, and I hope you don't mind if I share your post with her.

PS - My previous vehicle ... an '87 F350 SWR crew-cab never got better than 10 MPG, and only 7 or 8 MPG towing (351cu.in. gas V.
